Could do better!,
By Tony (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Linksys WVC54GUK Wireless-G Internet Video Camera (Electronics)
The quality of the video (with sound!) is fine but the camera is badly let down in the features list. There is no FTP or the ability to email a jpeg snapshot. All you can do is email a short video (Microsoft ASF format) which is is triggered by motion detection. Even a 2 second video is about 700KBytes! There are other (cheaper) IP cams available that have better functionality. I cannot access the camera from an 802.11b connected laptop, even to access the setup page. So much for backwards compatibility! On the plus side, it all works as advertised, and appears to be stable and bug free. Linksys could update the firmware to add functionality later.

Works just takes some time,

Looking at the reviews below, you'd be tempted to believe that this device just doesn't work. However it does, and once you have got it working, which takes some time, it does do what it says.A few items I found, I had to use a linksys ADSL router (WAG54G) as I couldn't get my Netgear to work with the device, port forwarding just wouldn't work; to view the video that gets sent in an email you have to download an obscure soft codec; the motion detection gets set off by changes in light, so it sends emails as it gets darker; setup did take a little working through, its by no means straight forward, and you need to know a little about networking; and it doesn't work with my macs. But outside of all of that the email notification does work, the connection from anywhere via a web browser works, and it does what I need it to do.

Lack of Linux Support lets this down,
This review is from: Linksys WVC54GUK Wireless-G Internet Video Camera (Electronics)
This is a great camera, supports VGA resolution, but requires you to download an activex component to view from IE. Mic and video quality are excellent considering the price.Downside - as the video format is Microsoft's proprietory ASF, the pages can only be viewed from Internet Explorer. That means it doesn't work on any other platform (including Linux). There is no facility to display even a simple jpeg snapshot! Summary: Nice camera, good that you don't need to keep the PC on.
