Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace -- whatever's important to you.

Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Home Monitoring Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. Choose either MPEG-4 or Motion JPEG video compression for a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 640x480 video stream.

The Compact Internet Home Monitoring Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. If you want the video to be visible from outside your home network, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. The TZO domain service (one-year trial sign-up included) lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember "name", even if your home Internet connection uses a dynamic IP address.

You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.

Let the Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera help you keep tabs on your world.

I had read reviews that the motion detection of this device was too sensitive, however, I had believed these reviews related to older versions of the product and this problem was now fixed. Unfortunately this is not the case. Even when set to minimum sensitivity levels, the device still falsely detects movement every few minutes. It seems the slightest variation in the ambient light will trigger the motion detection. I tried closed the blinds in my living room and faced the camera away from the windows to reduce the change in light levels, yet still every few minutes the device will email me warning messages at work. As a result I get 50~80 false alert emails a day with pictures of my living room. In addition the service I have spent my entire career in technology and can network proficiently yet I was unable to get the live video view working over the internet. The pictures captured are so blurry that the images would be close to useless in identifying burglers. Avoid this product unless for some reason you are not actually interested in motion detection and would just like to see blurry pictures of your living room every few minutes. A real shame as I am genearlly a fan of cisco/linksys products.

Terrible performance 22 Dec 2008
Linksys by Cisco WVC54GCA Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera

I bought this camera from a high street shop. I needed this camera to survey my premesis while I am away. Installation was easy if you read the manual. Motion detection is the nightmare, this is the worst camera for £90+. This is not just about being picky this will be the worst money spent on. I have adjusted the camera on the front door. For the 1st day while i was away it sent me 138 videos of 5 sec (motion detected), went through each of it and nothing happened. On my second day it sent me 98 videos of 5 seconds, basically for my 19 days holiday that camera sent me more than 100 videos per day average. It reacted to the post 1ce a day, the rest I think it reacted to sun light changes, as there is NO other explanation, I dont have animals, nor any curtains movements, etc. So if you need a camera to just view remotely in real time what is going on, it may be good for you, but if you want to use your camera for motion detected, then go and search another camera to buy.

This wireless webcam is very neat and small. The overall appearance is smart. It is a shame that they did not put as much care into the software development. The software is somewhat buggy in some aspects of use and in others it is just not up to the job at all.

As a webcam it is reasonably proficient and it will do this either wirelessly or wired. The wireless can be a bit flakey, but this can be due to various reasons including the use of non-static IP addresses and limited wireless range (according to reviews I read). I found it sometimes took the camera a long time to appear on the wireless network and it took such a time on occassions that I power cycled it again since I was sure it had frozen on startup. I also experienced it dropping off the network after a few days of use.

However, I have not really persevered with trying to solve that at the moment, since the main reason for buying this thing was because it was reviewed of the Gadget Show on channel 5 and they were recommending it as a security device - set it up to monitor somewhere and let the provided motion detection software alert you via email of any "action" (eg a burglar). That would be great if the software actually worked as it should. The trouble is that the software is just too damned sensitive and no matter what I tried, it would keep detecting false movement due to changes in ambient lighting or other "events" that were not real motion events. After doing a lot of Googling, it seems that this is a real issue with the camera, as is the lack of a newer firmware than well over a year old. A new firmware might solve some of these problems. The issue of the motion detection is particularly annoying, since if this worked properly (and the webcam did not drop off the network), it would be a superb bit of kit. What is even more annoying is that Linksys provide the souce of the firmware on their site (they have to, since it is an embedded Linux system and so is "free" software). If one looks at the source, one finds that there is another setting that is set as a default in the firmware. This is a trigger detection level that can modify the sensitivity of the camera. Linksys in their wisdom decided not to make this setting modifiable by the web interface (in fact, not making it modifiable at all by any normal user). Why? I guess only Linksys know that, but it seems a really silly thing to do. I have attempted to recompile the firmware image with this setting changed (reduced sensitivity), but have failed so far (cross compiling software is a bit of an art as well as a science and I am just a beginner). If someone out there is good at doing this sort of thing and wants a challenge...

Hence, it is okay for certain things, but rubbish at others (including what I bought it for) and so I have given it a poor score.
