Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
The Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G, Wireless-B, and other performance-enhanced SpeedBooster devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster incorporates the next generation of Wireless-G (802.11g) networking. SpeedBooster technology is a compatible add-on to standard Wireless-G, which increases "real-world" wireless network performance by up to 35%. Unlike other speed-enhancing technologies, SpeedBooster is fully 802.11 compliant, and a "good neighbor" to other wireless devices and technologies, using a single 2.4GHz channel as specified by the official wireless standard. And, unlike other technologies, with SpeedBooster you'll see an overall speed improvement even when running a mixed network of SpeedBooster and regular Wireless-G devices. To protect your data and privacy, the Router can protect all wireless transmissions with 128-bit encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The Router also enables the new Linksys Parental Control Service, which makes it easy for you to keep your family safe on the Internet. First, set individual profiles for time-of-day and day-of-week access restrictions. Then, choosing from 16 different web content categories, you control what each family member is allowed to see. E-mail and instant messaging filters let you decide who can send messages to, and receive messages from, your family. View on-line individualized activity reports anytime. A free trial of the Service is included with the Router. With the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

4.0 out of 5 stars Linksys WRT54GS, 9 Feb 2007
By J. Edwards (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This may not be a short review, but I'd like to submit that it is an unbiased point of view.

The Linksys routers cope very well for people like myself who use their internet connection enthusiastically. I've run web/FTP/mail servers and multiple IRC clients, shared web access for no less than 5 computers and all sorts of other stuff until my old linksys died (a BEFSR81 which did me at least 3 years of very heavy usage). I replaced it with a spare D-Link I'd acquired from someone who'd thought it was faulty (all it needed was a factory reset running twice for some bizarre reason), but it wasn't coping very well with redirecting incoming connections to my internal services.

I've concluded from this that the D-Links just aren't good enough for anything more than sharing a connection - if you want anything more advanced with a high volume of traffic they just aren't cut out for it (I found that it took at least 10 times longer than my older linksys to deal with incoming connections and for me that was causing time-outs).

I decided to go back to Linksys after the D-Link disaster and I picked the WRT54GS so that I would no longer need a seperate wireless access point. I've again been very pleased with my Linksys so far, apart from it needing the odd reboot every now and then.

Now I've seen several reviews on the internet moaning about how it's not possible to reboot one of these routers remotely. I'm sorry people, but you're wrong!! It is true that Linksys do not supply a way of clicking a "reboot router" button to achieve this, but there is a way of doing it. All you have to do is visit the configuration web front end (normally located at http://192.168.1.1/ ) go to the "Administration" tab and the "comfig Management" sub-tab then backup the settings to somewhere on the computer you're using and then upload them straight back to the router, the router will then reboot to use the "new" configuration.... this effectively doesn't change anything on the router because the settings you're uploading are exactly the same as what's stored in the router already, but it initiates the reboot, and that's what we were after!

So there you go, something less for people to moan about :-)

4 stars for being a good product - marked down only for the fact that it needs rebooting more often than my old Linksys used to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!, 26 Jan 2007

A big thank you to all these who gave a positive and detailed review of this router - I bought one on the strength of the positive feedback - AND THEY WERE RIGHT!

I have networked 2 wired PCs, got them to share a broadband connection, and set up the wireless part of the network and added 4 laptops - ALL with WEP encryption - all done in 1 hour - FAB! The signal strength is very good too.
I must positively recommend this product to everyone.

By Mr. M. Jacobs (stockport, cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Before purchasing any router, I thoroughly checked all competitors for product viability and value for money, I was left with Linksys and Belkin for final choice, after contacting both, Linksys offered the better service and replied to e-mail
questions without fuss..the item was received 2days after placing my order, and is the perfect partner for my lap-top..I would definately recommend Lynksys to anyone looking for lap top accessories.
