This is undoubtedly a very good home router. It is very well made - you definitely feel that you've got value for money when you first un-box it as it is quite a bit bigger than the standard router and it looks and feels good. It is great to see that Linksys still enable you to wall mount the router as most other routers can now only sit on a flat surface - it's nice to have that option. The initial setup is very straight forward and you will be up and running within 10 minutes. The interface is good when you get used to the layout and all the usual basic options are present. As to performance, it has a very impressive hardware spec that delivers very fast performance in all the features that the firmware has available. The WIFI range is amazing, router throughput is great and the storage options and speed are the best I have seen from a disk attached to a router. If all you need is great WIFI, great thoughput to the internet and hosting a USB drive for media then this router should definitely be on your short-list and hence the rating above.

However I believe Linksys have missed their target audience with this router. It is the most expensive, but includes probably the best hardware, of the current top spec routers from the usual makers. However the stock firmware is lacking a lot of the features that people buying this price of router are after, (for example no native VPN clients, download engines, etc.) Now it may be that in time they will add these features to the stock firmware or the open source firmwares will adopt the hardware, but until then I will be switching back to my Asus AC68U.

I received this on Saturday. I spent about 15 minutes setting it up, during which time it automatically downloaded a firmware update and installed it. I have an ADSL connection so this router just plugs into the back of my combined modem/router. I then spent the rest of the day switching my 20ish wifi connected devices to the new router.

All of them worked and the signal is now so, so, so much stronger I've done away with a few powerline connections which were located where my old (and quite good) wifi signal wasn't strong enough.

Like I said, everything works - TV, router, scales, 3 mac laptops, 4 ipads, 2 iphones, printer, airprint - and the connection inside my house is very very fast. My downloaded movies load up on my apple tv incredibly fast, compared to before.

Brilliant, but expensive device. I'm very glad to have it in my house. Now ... if only my external broadband connection were a bit faster.

It's really nice piece of kit looks nicer than any other router out there - more importantly it very easy to set up and works like a dream very fast -I love it. Its expensive but you want the best and a solid product you won't be disappointed. We have Bt Infinity and it works without any problem with the BT Openreach vdsl modem.

I chose the router being I had problem with the BT home hub 4 and 5 and the Netgear R700 in relation to wifi signal - live in a two story town house and this router pushes out a good signal all over the house where the others did not.

For someone who is used to living with a BT Homehub my first reaction on unpacking this router was wow! it's enormous. With the 4 aerials attached it resembles a large upturned crab but the build quality makes it look like it's ready to do the business.
The rear of the body is made from moulded black plastic and the front in blue. The front panel hosts a number of indicators showing power on, internet, 2.4 Ghz, 5 Ghz, eSata, USB1, USB2 and 4 lights for each of the Gigabyte outlets. The rear panel has the power on/off switch, 12 volt power inlet, reset button, USB1 socket which also acts as the eSata connector, USB2 socket which provides USB 3.0, ethernet socket to connect to WAN and 4 Gigabyte ethernet sockets, last but not least is the one touch wireless pairing button.
My Homehub5 has the BT Infinity modem built in so it meant digging out the BT modem that was originally supplied with the Homehub4. Connected the cable from my modem to the WAN socket on the router and turned on. After the power indicator had stopped flashing I connected my LAN cable to Ethernet 1.
Opening the browser on my PC I typed in the address given in the instructions and followed the on screen prompts to connect to the internet. The next stage allowed me to personalize my network passwords so I changed them to something more memorable which is a lot easier than having to dig out the piece of paper with your password written on every time you want to connect a new piece of wireless kit. The browser page then informed me that the router was set up and prompted me to create a Linksys smart wi-fi account. With this account created you can access and modify your router set-up remotely.
From powering up to having my PC connected took about 15 hitch-free minutes.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
One of the first things I noticed about this router from Linksys was the size - it's larger than others that I've used. It's also got a fairly striking appearance so it's probably not going to be the choice of someone who is looking for an unobtrusive little box that sits in the corner; this is definitely a router which wants to be noticed! It's the flagship of the Linksys range too with performance to match its looks, although prospective buyers should note that it is a router only, and not a modem router. That means it's suitable for use on a cable service or a fibre connection through one of the providers on the BT network.

Setup was fairly straightforward and the unit was working within a short time, although it did need an update to its firmware. It comes with a printed quick-start guide plus a CD of documentation, and also a cable to connect it to your modem. In operation it performs well with good transfer speeds across the network. I have it set up with three laptops, a couple of tablets and mobiles, plus other devices and it seems to cope well with all of them running at once. Even large files (video/music/streaming) are handled well and I have been very impressed by its performance in every way but one, and that is the range it covers. Despite having four aerials connected I find that the range on the router is no better than on my other routers, which was a surprise. It does cover the house pretty well, but to extend outside into my garden I still need to rely on a repeater unit that I'd hoped would no longer be necessary. To summarise I'd say that the WRT1900AC is a very good router that is almost as exciting in use as it looks, but I do wish its range was a bit better and that's why I can't give it that fifth star.
