Ok, have now got to change the rating. Bought two of these - first one failed, though in fairness, was replaced promptly. The second box just stopped working periodically and needed to be restarted. Backups failed part way through leaving us exposed. Took the drives out and put into a different NAS box (Synology) and that has worked seamlessly.

I would no longer recommend this NAS device.

I have purchased two of these, and one has now stopped working altogether. Will try to update after repair.

ORIGINAL REVIEW
First time using a NAS drive and this worked well, with just one minor setup issue (see below). Added two 1.5T drives and they installed and were formatted easily. The whole setup was pretty straightforward with just one glitch - the wizard setup got stuck on asking for a new admin password. No matter what I entered it just stayed there. A quick look at the support site allowed me to login directly and bypass the wizard, and then used the web interface to complete the setup.

I also upgraded the firmware which is supposed to improve the performance.

It connected to the network seamlessly and is now readily attached by anyone on the network.

Did a quick transfer test with a large folder of photographs - 12 GBytes of photos with about 14,000 files took just over an hour to transfer, at a quoted rate of about 2.5 MB/Sec, which to me seems very good for a product of this price.

There are faster NAS drives out there but at a higher cost. I think this one is excellent value and more than adequate for my needs.

I can't comment on it's use as a media centre as I didn't enable that, and it's not what I wanted it for.

NAS200 29 Mar 2009
I bought this to replace an existing NAS drive. The NAS 200 outperforms the old drive in a number of different ways:
1. You choose the HDD to install
2. It is scalable
3. I can house more than one drive
4. You can share you files on the internet if you need/want to (free trial)
5. Standard config is for space but you can choose

Great bit of kit, easy setup for experienced and inexperienced users.

If you want to store all of your documents so you can access them from within your home network, this will do the job very well.

Drawbacks are the footprint is a little larger than the old NAS and the fan can be a little noisy but I am very happy with it so far.

I have had one of these for a couple of years and I'm afraid to say I can't recommend it. Actual setup and getting it working is easy enough but the two big problems for me are:

1. It is very noisy - the fans seem to run constantly and it is louder than my PC!
2. The read/write speeds are poor - about 4Mb/sec.It will just about stream mpeg video without stuttering.

I had a few problems when I first got it where it would seemingly overheat and lock up necessitating a reboot. I moved it to a location with better airflow and it has been stable since then.
So I would say only buy this if noise isn't a problem (if you can squirrel it away in a location where it won't bother you) or if read/write speeds aren't an issue.
