The one most important thing you want with a device like this is the knowledge that it will work and carry on working. I work in IT and decided that I wanted a NAS solution for home, did some research and eventually decided that maybe this would fit the bill. Setup was easy, transfering my files was easy as well but if you strip back the very colourful interface with all the nice large buttons and graphics it is actually a simple storage unit.

I even got as far as setting up my online access which is actually a URL controlled by the Cisco website, very good idea. Then, it all went wrong. I updated the firmware and that was it, the unit HD light just flashed, woke up next morning, contacted their online people via the website (very very good Customer services by the way) and they confirmed the unit was dead.

Now ordinarily that wouldn't be an issue but would you actually return this to be repaired? What would happen if the same thing happened 6 months down the line when you had everything on there? You would be gutted!!!! You just don't want a gadget like this being unreliable do you?

So, my experience was bad because of the unreliability, maybe I was "very" unlucky, if it had been reliable I would have said in this review that this unit was perfect for a home user, someone who doesn't really get IT, it's easy to setup, it's even very easy to access remotely but you cannot forgive a unit like this not being bullet proof, that's why you bought it and paid the extra for the name didn't you?

Good but beware... 23 July 2009
By Mark Webb TOP 500 REVIEWER
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a classy and upmarket device which allows the user to store and share files across the local network and the internet - either through the Linksys portal or directly through the internet if the WAN IP address of the device is known the router correctly configured. It allows music and video to be played with a home media player, addressed by ftp and also via a built in iTunes server.

Straight from the box the device works perfectly welI and sits there quietly doing its job with no problems.
But in fact there is one problem and a big one. Straight from the box the device works perfectly well. However, the interface does offer to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. In fact this seems good as it offers many new features, such as the possibility of using drives of up 2TB in size. Don't be tempted to do this. I tried and the update process failed after a long delay and I was forced to reformat the drives and factory reset the unit.

The Good
Good build quality
Classy and upmarket appearance
Works very well from the box.
Custom internet interface available
Front panel LED's display the status of the drives and network interface
Local network interface offers full control of the device with graphical display.

The Bad
The web interface is slow and a but clunky
Upgrading the firmware may crash the device badly
Other devices with comparable performance are available more cheaply
Takes some time to start up and be available on the network.
Starts up when plugged in when still switched off.

Easy media server 18 May 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Sub £100 and does so much. Simple too, run the software, fire it up and hook it via supplied LAN cable to your router and that's it. The client (laptop or desktop) software is also quick and easy and its a doddle setting up backups. The interface to view files and sort settings is a little clunky/basic but its also easy to set up access from a web page allowing remote access. Note you only get the one drive, it will accept any second hard drive of at least the same capacity and it just plugs in. You can have that as a mirror to the first drive or additional storage. As an iTunes user the iTunes Server software built in is another benefit. All the same there for Media Player if that's your preference. It even sets up shares for you by default and if you plug in external drives via USB to the media hub maps them too, automatically.
