5.0 out of 5 stars If you've ever played, or ever want to play links golf ...., 3 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book gives the reader a wonderful insight into the life and travels of the author as he takes a year from his life to devote to the game of golf.

From his initial adventures in caddying on the European Tour you are taken on a trip to some of Scotland's greatest courses. The travels of the author are based around his ongoing instruction from his "mentor", John Stark. From this point, at Crieff Golf Club, we travel to places such as Machrahanish, Muirfield and the Home of Golf, St Andrews. The author's obsession for links golf is obvious as he shares some of these rounds with us, detailing the courses and the playing partners he met on the way.

The book has the hilarity and insight into the caddying world of "Four-Iron in the Soul" by Lawrence Donegan while also showing us the profound effect golf can have in a lifetime that we see in "Final Rounds" by James Dodson.

For those who have played the courses, this book will undoubtedly cast the readers mind back to those rounds - the missed putts, the great drives and the joy of playing links golf. For those who have yet to make the trip, this will give you the incentive you need.

If you have a passion for the game of golf then this is a very enjoyable read. It's not about how to play the game, it's about how it can become something more than just a game.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gentle 18 chapters on the beauty of Golf, 26 April 2007
This is a great read. It is not an 'essential' read as there is nothing on instruction as has been pointed out already. What the book does do, is rekindle the desire for links golf if you have already played and if you have not, it will create a strong desire to visit Scotland and play some of the courses mentioned.

The book begins with Bamberger describing how he has taken a years' leave of absence from work, along with his newly acquired wife, and gone to spend 5 months on the European Golf Tour caddying for a living before ending his extended leave of absence with a tour of Scotland playing the famous and not so famous links courses.

Whilst not being a natural wit, Bamberger does have his moments of hilarity, however, where he comes into his own is his descriptions of the courses and land he discovers during his odyssey.

This book made me yearn for links golf, for Scotland and for those quirky shots you only get at a tight fairway'ed, fast running course by the sea.

Excellent!
