It is hard to write an unbiased review of Jean Yates' book Links.

Firstly, Jean is a friend. I love her wit and admire her talents beyond words. Secondly she has used my beads in some projects and even used our shared experiences too as inspiration for the Edward the Sheep bracelet project!

So how on earth could I not like this book?

Of course I knew it would be fabulous before I even set eyes on it. One only has to know Jean and know her work to be absolutely sure of that.

Once I had set eyes on it, I realized I had still made quite an underestimation. It is beyond fabulous.

The heart of this book's success lies not in the projects themselves - although all the projects are delightful. They are imaginative, contemporary designs that combine chainmaille and stringing techniques in some very exciting and unusual ways.

The success of Links (and what sets it apart from other "how-to" books) is how Jean has taught the reader how she arrived at each design - not just presented the design, a list of materials and expect the reader to get on with it as though she were a parrot.

Jean shares in detail exactly what lead her to choose the components selected, the techniques employed. This helps the reader learn ways to do the same and design her own, more personal designs alongside those shown in the book. Where other books give you a fish, Links teaches you how to fish.

When following the projects, even beginner jewellery makers will have no trouble keeping up. They will be amazed at the sophisticated jewellery they can create by following the simple step-by-step photographs. Everything you need to know regarding tools, materials and techniques is outlined in the opening chapters, with clear photographs of all the key steps. More experienced jewellery makers will still find plenty of new ideas and inspirational designs throughout the book.

The layout is very elegant and the photography beautiful. Jean has peppered the book with her own tips, ideas and variations for projects. She has also included some wonderful quotes from other jewellery and bead artists regarding creativity and how to harness it. The book includes a useful directory of resources, inspiring artists and even handy charts for things such as metric conversion and MOHS scale of hardness!

What more could you want from a book?

Not much in my opinion. You are more than spoilt by Links as it really does tick all the boxes.

Just a few projects are okish, it's not worth the number of stars other reviewers have given it. But then one of them is related to the author, the book is just pure hype. You are better off buying books by Sharilyn Miller & Linda Jones.

What can I say? It's not one of those books that will have you reaching out for your beads and tools straight away. I tucked it away thinking the book will eventually grow on me but it just didn't. I have sold it at a loss but I am just glad to be rid of it.

I think she should be one of those teachers on jewelery lessons site. She can sell her designs one at a time in downloadable form, it is just not worth writing a book about. However, the project on the cover is really nice, which was why I bought the book.

Aviod this book if you are serious about jewellery making.

This review is from: Links: Inspired Bead and Wire Jewelry Creations (Paperback)
My shipment from Amazon has crossed the Atlantic to England & delivered into my hands a luscious, lavish & extraordinary book, namely 'Links' by the well known American jewellery designer, Jean Yates. I have the good fortune to own an extensive library of reference books, but I can't think of any other jewellery book or manual that explains the craft of jewellery design & creation as thoroughly & pertinently as 'Links'. I've been assembling jewellery for several years, but even so, I've learnt new techniques & I've certainly assimilated fresh perspectives about design.

Jean's designs are so glamorous & gloriously feminine - they celebrate the art of the coquette & her womanly wiles. Turn to page 88 & enjoy the allure of Jean's `Gigi Bracelet.' Trace back to page 62 & behold the enticing `Blooming Chain Maille Earrings'. Tiptoe through the pages once more & prepare for the glory of the 'Sun & Shadow Necklace' on page 118. Jean's jewellery is sumptuous and, as I once wrote in a fan letter:

'Am I Madame de Pompadour?' Where is my Salon?' These are the daydreams that drift through my head when I survey your earrings. I may long to have the brain of a blue stocking, but I want to look like a luscious courtesan which is why I am so grateful to you for these earrings. They make me feel like a marquise & I swear that my neck lengthens into that of an aristocratic when I wear them. They are a Rococo dream & blissfully baroque! Jean, without doubt, you are a very special magician!'

In `Links', Jean discusses & shares the wide ranging prompts, clues & cues which inspire her designs. In other words, she has created a source book for the imagination! The word 'inspirational' is bandied around a great deal now & there are times when I feel it's in danger of losing its lustre. 'Links' restores it - Jean's book puts 'inspirational' back on top of the value pile & far away from any commonplace usage.

`Links' is also an account of a voyage. It's an autobiography in jewellery of a remarkable woman's life. For those of us who have the privilege of knowing Jean, she has created an emotional touchstone for us all. For those of you who are new to her work, read her stories & reflect & imagine. I defy you not to be moved by her words or inspired by her designs & ideas.

This is an extraordinary & extravagant book, richly inventive & full of fascination. Read `Links`& be inspired - make your own links & begin to chart your unique stories.
