Manufacturer's Description

The Wii Remote and Nunchuk both take on a new feeling when placed within the Wii Zapper. In Links Crossbow Training players use the Wii Remote in the Wii Zapper to aim at targets on the screen, with the Nunchuk controlling movement. On the Wii Remote, players simply press down the trigger (the B Button) to fire, or continue the pressure for a more powerful shot. They can also re-position themselves, turning in different directions by aiming the pointer off-screen. On the Nunchuk the Z-Button acts as a zoom function for the camera so that the shot is completely on target. Links Crossbow Training sees each player take on the role of Link in a series of exciting and fast-paced challenges set in the world of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Players can get accustomed to the Wii Zapper with Links Crossbow Training and practice Target Shooting as well as the Defender and Ranger modes, ensuring an action-packed experience in numerous stages spread over nine levels. The object of each stage is to achieve the highest score before the time limit expires. Utilising the innovative Wii Zapper allows players to take aim and fully immerse themselves into the game in a completely new way!

THE WII ZAPPER - 5/5

The Wii Zapper is a new peripheral for the Nintendo Wii where you can clip your Wii remote and Nunchuck into the shell to create a lightgun. The lay-out of the controller can be a bit strange to begin with, having the trigger button at the front of the gun. But after just a few minutes play this will become no problem at all and you can then start to have some fun with it.

It works on all Wii games but is obviously only designed for a handful of arcade shooters so far. You get a copy of "Link's Crossbow Training" as part of the package, which is a great game in it's own right and an excellent freebie if you were going to buy the Zapper anyway. So far I've only tried this on Link's Crossbow Training and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, but both work perfectly with it giving a real arcade feel to the games, and allows for much more acurate (and comfortable) shooting. House of the Dead and Ghost Squad are due out in early 2008 and are supposed to be making full use of the Zapper.

LINK'S CROSSBOW TRAINING - 5/5

GAMEPLAY - 5/5
Think of the classic Duck Hunt mixed with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and that'll give you some kind of idea of what to expect here. There are 8 levels, each split into 3 stages. You must then complete the given tasks to earn points to get you the bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards. Using the Wii Zapper makes this game play as smoothly and as accurately as you could possibly want with an arcade shooter. The difficulty increases as you go through the stages and there is plenty of variety in the levels. It's fast, fluid action that does not tire at all.

GRAPHICS - 4/5
The visuals are the same style and are from the same settings such as Hyrule from Twilight Princess but are not quite as polished and sharp as the original. This is not too much of an issue though, as it does still look pretty good and doesn;t affect the gameplay in the slightest. Even the smallest of targets are clearly visable if you've got the HD cable for the Wii. Otherwise, it can be a bit blurry.

SOUND - 5/5
All of the music is straight out of Twilight Princess, so if you're familiar with that game, you'll know what to expect here. Again, a beautiful score with some really memorable tunes.

LIFESPAN - 4/5
It isn't too hard to finish the game on bronze medals but the replay value really comes in when you start to try to beat yours and your friends' highest scores and try to get platinum medals in all levels. The replay value on this is basically endless.

OVERALL - 5/5
An excellent introduction to using the Wii Zapper and for as little as £20 (in most shops) you get a great quality game that has the potential to be a game that you'll keep playing for months, even years, to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun., 7 Dec 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought the Wii Zapper/Links Crossbow Training today, and my wife and I have had a blast playing it.
Its great fun, pretty low brow and mindless but great fun. Some of the games are easier than others.
But for me the main thing was the Wii Zapper, I am looking forward to Medal of Honor 2 coming out next year and trying the zapper out with that, should be great fun. In the mean time I might have to to get Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles to keep me going.

One thing though, dont pay more than £20. I got mine from Argos for £19.99 and thats the most its worth.

3.0 out of 5 stars ZAPPED!, 13 Feb 2008
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This is a good value bundle from Nintendo, featuring the Wii Zapper and Link's Crossbow Training. At this price, it just about works but the zapper is going to need some pretty decent games to make it a worthwhile investment.

Fitting your Wii Remote and Nunchuk into the Zapper is straightforward and it's a very neat and tidy gadget. It has a reasonable degree of weight and is well-made, so hopefully won't break too easily. There is one small problem, there is a clip which goes round the bottom of the Nunchuk to hold it in place. This is attached to the Zapper's main body using just a thin piece of plastic and looks highly likely to snap unless treated gently. For the extra few pence, it would have been better for Nintendo to use a proper hinge on this part.

Link's Crossbow Training is a very basic game, with only three game modes. Featured are target shooting, defending yourself against waves of enemies, and an on foot mode where you walk across the level (you move using the stick on the nunchuk), despatching enemies as you go.

There are different environments, skill levels and scores to achieve, so these keep you going a while. There is also multiplayer to give a competitive edge, although gameplay is the same.

The Zapper works well in these games, the controls are responsive and the game is good fun. But the bottom line is you could play it without the Zapper, and just use the Remote and Nunchuk in each hand instead. This may even be more comfortable for extended periods.

There is a sight on screen at all times. Remember that you are still using the Wii Remote to aim and it doesn't have a built-in sight like a proper lightgun peripheral has. Therefore, the only attraction of the Zapper is if you like to hold something vaguely gun-like rather than the controls on their own. You can't aim using it as you are still reliant on the sight on screen.

This bundle is worth the investment at this price, but with only a couple of games supporting the Zapper so far it may not be long before this particular peripheral is sadly forgotten about.
