I came at this book with the hope of getting an idea of what goes on in Linguistics, and I'd say it manages to serve that purpose well enough. For acquainting oneself with basic terminology and outline of the processes, it would probably be hard to do much better. It is in the clearest sense an 'introduction', and so anyone looking for a depth of knowledge will have to go much beyond these pages; however what it does, it does clearly enough to get anyone interested in Linguistics off to a good start.

I bought this book for the first year of my English Language and Linguistics degree and it's really useful to refer to. I especially liked the sections at the end of each chapter where you could test what you'd learnt. The layout was clear and easy to follow with keywords in bold, so easy to skim back to when you reviewed the chapter. Well worth the buy and good value for money.
