“You can’t change the past… no matter how much you want to.”

If only Allie Collins could go back to that tragic day one year ago, perhaps she could escape the guilt that haunts her. In reality, there was no altering her cousin’s death or the role she played.

Then she meets Damien Michaels, a dark-haired stranger on a dirt bike, who seems to watch Allie and know more about her than he should. Veiling his own secrets, including a mysterious scar and tattoo, Allie knows she shouldn’t trust him—especially as she digs up a past Damien desperately wants to forget. She also doesn’t believe in summer romances, yet she finds her attraction to him growing beyond his striking grey eyes. Too late, Allie discovers he is hiding a dark past that is far from over, endangering her life and those she loves.

I think it is a story that will appeal to the young romantics with a penchant for heartbreak.

Allie has been taken back to the scene of a traumatic experience, one that fills her with guilt, despite her lack of blame. I was surprised by the fact she hadn't felt it necessary to share any details about the incident prior to her conversation with Damien. No police? How about the poor parents, surely they would have asked how and why?

There was a wee element I found disturbing, which kept seeping into the story and was part of both Allie and Damien's story. The way the author described and referred to one of the three youths, who late take the girls to a party. In the second half of the story one of the Samoan guys says something similar. I found it borderline racist.

Apparently this is New Adult, strange I had it pegged as YA, especially due to the teeny feel and lack of romp action. Not that the lack of romp was or is a negative factor, but the story seems to be more geared towards the younger reader, hence my surprise at finding out it isn't.

Damien and Allie have a connection and they share a past, although only one of them knows it. It is time Allie took a deep breath and a dive into the cold murky waters of her past.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more than just a romance . . . 31 May 2014

On first glance it appears that Lingering Echoes is the quintessential good girl meets bad boy romance story, but in actual fact the story goes far deeper than that, revealing hidden truths and healing family misunderstandings.
This is not a long novel and I was able to finish it in one sitting, revelling in Erica Kiefer's rich storytelling and intimate characterizations.
Allie has returned to Hidden Pines a year after a family tragedy which she feels responsible for, only to befriend the young man who is the source of much town gossip. Their friendship is based on trust and while Damien helps Allie to overcome her fears, she enables him to open up about his own secrets, without fear of prejudice. Despite their personal tragedies these are two gutsy characters, who are willing to make sacrifices to develop their romance.
The reader begins the story with preconceptions about Damien as his family history is established, but the more we know him our opinion changes and we desire the couple's happy ever after. But to reach their ending Damien and Allie have to overcome obstacles and as the plot develops Erica Kiefer's writing becomes more urgent, adding to the tension and expectancy.
I was surprised by how involved I became in this story and think that Lingering Echoes will be enjoyed by fans of contemporary romance with an extra dose of mystery.
I received this as a complimentary review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional rollercoaster recommended to all... :) 21 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Allie is brought back to the one place she never wanted to go on a holiday with family and friends. Hoping that this trip will reunite them again and allow her to face her fears, her dad feels that Allie needs a little push to try and leave behind the guilt of what Allie has blamed herself for over the last year.

There she bumps into Damien, a secretive boy who she finds she can say anything to, thing she hasn't even told her family. That is after her saves her multiple times !! He is dark and mysterious and I want him! His story is gradually revealed to us which only adds to his character. It is an amazing story and I really felt sorry for him. Kudos to Erica though for making both of their voices very distinct from each other though!!

I fell in love with the characters and honestly had to wait near the end of the book till I finally decided which boy wanted her to be with. I love Erica's writing and, while this may be the first of her work that I have read, I can guarantee that it won't be the last of hers I read. The plot unfolded beautifully and I found myself on the edge of my seat quite a few times!! This book is all about growth; character growth. The setting is perfect for the growth of the characters and their bonds with each other. A book I would recommend to all. It was so good I read it within less than two hours!!! Happy reading :) xx

3.0 out of 5 stars Lingering echoes 14 Mar 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
Allie, Nick, Aaron and Brooke are spending the summer in lakeshore cabins but Allie isn't enjoying herself. Her father left the family and remarried, and Nick is the six-foot-one son of his new wife. Brooke is a chatty holidaymaker who fancies Aaron, Nick's pal. Allie can't stop thinking about her young cousin who drowned the previous year... she never wanted to come here again, but her dad insisted.

A ghost story told over a campfire adds to the atmosphere. Then Brooke urges the others to come and see the site of the tale, a burned cabin. Allie falls out with the others over mentions of the death of the little girl she was minding, and starts spending time with a local lad called Damien instead; he's got a motorbike and seems more interesting.

Allie has a lot of repressed emotions - anger and resentment at her father and his new family, distress over the drowning, guilt over having been in charge of the little girl. She's stopped trying for good grades. All she likes is running, as she can be alone with herself. Maybe this is why she likes Damien - he's an outsider. Some internet research on the ghost story cabin however provides an unsavoury truth about him. Should she drop the guy, and is it too late to change her ways?

This young adult novel comes across as claustrophobic, despite being set in an outdoor location. Allie spends so much time inside her own feelings that she unintentionally becomes self-centred and isolated. At one point she tells her father that they have not spoken properly in four years. Only when Allie makes an effort to understand Damien can she stop thinking about herself. For teens who want an edgy romance between two haunted young people, Erica Kiefer has produced a readable and ultimately hopeful love story.
