4.0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your bra straps and belt buckles! 6 July 2012
By vox libris - Published on
What would you do if your month old infant faces a life threatening illness for which his only possible chance at survival is a bone marrow transplant with his father as the donor, only the father is missing? What would you do? You would do anything to save your child, wouldn't you?

Amanda Gleason sure would.

In Andrea Kane's wonderful The Line Between Here and Gone, Amanda faces this awful situation. Her baby son is battling one awful illness after another, and he desperately needs a bone marrow transplant in order to survive. Amanda is not a candidate, but the doctor believes Paul, the baby's father, would be. Unfortunately, he is gone - assumed dead, although his body was never found. Then one day, a friend sends Amanda a picture of someone who looks an awful lot like Paul on a street in Washington, DC. Amanda takes the photo to Forensic Instincts, an unconventional group of investigators, and begs them to help her find out what happened to her baby daddy. The group agrees.

There are a LOT of twists and turns to this story, but they are easy to follow (thank you, Andrea Kane). There is nothing so convoluted here that you cannot figure out what is happening, and even with all of the characters and plot twists, you are as emotionally invested as the Forensics Instincts people, who feel the clock ticking. FI's Casey Woods is so frantic that she tries to enlist the aid of her FBI boyfriend:

"It might involve a crime family as well as a national politician. We don't know. We will know, because we wouldn't have it nay other way. But an infant's life is on the line. We don't have the luxury of time. And you have the ability and resources to accelerate the process. So anything you could find out would be crucial to our search for Paul Everett."

In addition to the mystery and suspense, there are some romantic entanglements as well. Casey begs her boyfriend for help, but he can't breach the FBI. Two of FI's staffers are attracted to each other, but reluctant to act upon it. If it seems like this would be distracting in a tense thriller, you're wrong. The romance helps lighten a very heavy book. Any time a baby's life hangs in the balance, you are in for a rough time.

This is a really good book, folks. It hooks you immediately and you will not be able to stop until you find out what happened to Paul and why. And, of course, you will want to know what happens to Amanda's baby. It isn't perfect - there are a couple of twists that are not fully or well explained - but it's good.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Clock Is Ticking to Save a Baby's Life 5 July 2012
By K. M. Martin - Published on
Amanda Gleason's baby son is very ill. He needs a stem cell transplant from a matched donor to survive. Unfortunately, Amanda is not a candidate and the baby's father - Paul Everett - was the victim of a presumed homicide though his body was never found. But a friend has sent a cell phone picture that looks like Paul that she recently took in Washington, DC. Amanda takes the picture and all her hopes to Forensic Instincts in the hopes that they will be able to find Paul in time to save his son's life.

The five members of Forensic Instincts - six, if you count the bloodhound Hero - take the case and almost immediately find out that it is much more complicated than they had thought. The head of the company is Casey Woods, a trained behavioral and investigative profiler. Marc is a former Navy SEAL and FBI agent. Paul is also former FBI. Claire is a psychic and Ryan is the tech genius. All are committed to helping Amanda save her son.

Forensic Instinct's investigation leads to cover-ups, corrupt politicians, the mob and an FBI investigation that they are in danger of blowing. The story was well-done, exciting, and a hard to put down read. I had a pretty good idea who the major villain was early in the story but wasn't at all sure that the team would be able to find Paul Everett in time.

When I began the story, I first thought that some of the dialogue was stilted but, as I engaged more in the story, I stopped noticing it. This was a very good story for lovers of thrillers that have high-stakes investigations but without resorting to any sort of graphic violence. The pacing is fast which goes along with the timetable that they need to meet to save baby Justin's life.

I recommend this one highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clever and gut-wrenching thriller! 2 July 2012
By Wendy L. Hines - Published on
Amanda Gleason is at her rope's end. Her one-month old son, Justin, is fighting for his life. He has a rare disease and he needs a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately for Amanda, her Hepatitis C prevents her from being a donor candidate. What she needs is Justin's father, but he was murdered eight months ago.

On a rare break at the hospital, Amanda receives a text from a friend. The text contains a picture that looks just like Paul, her old boyfriend who was killed. Grasping at straws, Amanda immediately moves into action and goes to FI, Forensic Instincts. There, she begs them to let her hire her. They have a reputation of closing cold cases and getting results, where normal law enforcement can't go.

After their initial coverage of the case, the team is sure that Paul is alive. A no-body homicide with too many loose ends sets the team into deep investigation on many levels. Not only do they find out that Paul was involved with the mob, but it seems that leads take them straight to Washington. Amanda's baby is running out of time, and her wealthy uncle, who is footing the medical bills, isn't looking too clean.

The team is has many talents, but will they find Paul before it's too late for Justin? Or will Amanda have to find another way to save her son if Paul is really dead? As the secrets are revealed, the danger increases around Amanda and her infant son.

THE LINE BETWEEN HERE AND GONE is a thrilling page-turner with a cast of unique and likable characters. From the first page, I was praying for baby Justin and hoping that Forensic Instincts could pull off a miracle. From the adrenaline pumping plot twists to the emotion packed hospital scenes, THE LINE BETWEEN HERE AND GONE is a clever and gut-wrenching thriller!

4.0 out of 5 stars Race to Save a Life 17 July 2012
By Pat Fordyce - Published on
This is Andrea Kane's second novel about the investigative group called Forensic Instincts. I hope it's not her last! It is action packed from page one, and pushes you through a range of emotions, hope, fear, and anger, among others.
A newborn's life hangs in the balance, and FI is called in to find the father who has disappeared. They all become attached to this innocent baby, and his mother. They will do whatever necessary in or outside the law to accomplish this.
It is definitely not a book you can put down and pick up later. Enjoyed every page....thank you Ms Kane, looking forward to the next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent Forensic Instincts novel! 5 Sep 2012
By David N. Parker - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
With this novel Andrea Kane solidifies her reputation of writing excellent suspense stories built around a private investigation firm and various Federal agencies in solving unusual crimes.
Six months after Amanda Gleason's lover, Paul Everett, disappears without a trace - leaving his blood-soaked car near Montauk Point on Long island - she delivers his son. Within days, she is deep in another trauma - her son has an immune deficiency that can only be cured by a stem cell transfusion. While her doctor and the nurses at the hospital fight with several infections, Amanda tries to find Paul. He is the only likely candidate for stem cells that the baby will not reject, and therefore the only likely donor who can help.
But he is considered dead - except by Amanda. Law enforcement searched diligently for his body; not only cannot it be found, but there is no other conclusive evidence that he is dead. In an effort to help her seriously ill baby, Amanda contracts with Forensic Instincts to try to trace Paul in her effort to save her child.
The search uncovers a plethora of possibilities. Forensic Instincts uncovers not only evidence of foul play, but traces Paul's connections back to Amanda's uncle, a major NY crime family, and drug trafficking. Was Paul killed because he was involved? Was he killed because he found out something and was trying to report or stop it? Or is Amanda right, and he is still alive - but either being held or is hiding?
I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
