My husband and I bought two of these gates after reading good reviews on other sites. While I'm sure it is perfectly adequate when no extension is required, applying the extension to the gate is a painful process (you may need to gently tap with a hammer and screwdriver . . .) and it took us approximately an hour and a half to extract the plastic bungs necessary to add the extension on to the gate using brute force and more tools than you can shake a stick at. Never has a stair gate been called so many bad names and nearly caused a divorce! I would not recommend this gate to anybody who needs to put it in an opening where an extension is required. Surely, life shouldn't be that difficult. I'd like to think we are quite intelligent, level headed people. A stair gate shouldn't be able to cause us to break down.
