Reviews

The entire first series of the hit BBC comedy show starring Liza Tarbuck as sassy Mancunian thirtysomething Linda Green. While she works as a salesperson in a car showroom during the day, the night finds Linda taking to the stage to sing her heart out at the local nightclub. Her good friend Michelle (Claire Rushbrook) might have settled down to have kids, but Linda's still out there looking for Mr Right and having the time of her life.

I loved this series, the breezy, man-eating character played by Lisa Tarbuck is just great. Whats even better about her is that she is portrayed believably as a sexy sassy lady, yet she is not the stereotypical size 8 blonde version of attractiveness.
The storylines are laughable, ridiculous and strangely believable all at the same time, and there are some classic one liners in amongst the general humour. Her supporting cast are also excellent as both backdrop to her and also as equals to her.
All in all I have nothing bad to say about this series, and if you missed it on television then be sure to buy it on video, as its a great watch and well worth the price.
Enjoy....

Absolutely superb comedy drama with many funny moments. Liza Tarbuck carries the title role well, she's big brassy and confident - most of the time anyway. However I felt the singing is probably a bit overdone which is pretty much how it goes in each episode.

Daniel Ryan, Claire Rushbrook and Sean Gallagher who are the principal members of the supporting cast - being Linda's best mates. I enjoy watching out for early appearances of established stars or cameos even and this series is packed with them. Pam Ferris is brilliant as are David Morrissey and Christopher Eccleston - he plays twins - which I thought was a great storyline. I also spotted Maxine Peake aka Victoria Wood's Dinnerladies and later to be Veronica Fisher in Shameless) as a receptionist in a gym.

I hope the BBC and Red Production Company could release the second series. It's well worth it.

I remembered enjoying it at the time (though always the singing was too much), but upon watching it again I was surprised at how bad I found it. There are some great moments, and some great performances, but on the whole I did not rate it.

Liza Tarbuck's voice is not very good. This may be acceptable if you are singing in a small local club, but even then I think that you would be expected to have at least another string to your bow. There is a lot of singing, primarily at the beginning of the episodes, but sometimes popping up throughout. The songs chosen are supposed to be indicative of what is going on for her (I assume).

I felt that the twins story in the first episode was ridiculous as it is implausible. Later on that someone would be so gullible re internet dating stretches plausibility. The episode where Linda 'wants' to be sexually harrassed I found rather offensive (making light of a man who gropes women at work). The idea that Victim Support would do what they did is just beyond ridiculous.

Little niggles: some of the male characters have the worst fake tattoos I have ever seen! Linda is 32 and perfectly intelligent and yet has apparently had the same job since leaving school and a string of very short term relationships and that's about it. Boring or what?!

I would give it 2.5 stars, it is OK (but I take off .5 for the singing). It is unpretentious fun, and Linda does not go on about her weight all the time, which could have been an easy target for comedy. Some of the moments are truly funny, usually around observation of real people and their quirks. I liked that she has a man friend with whom she sometimes has a sexual relationship. I have not seen this before presented in such an acceptable way. I found that practising having a baby in the last episode to be one of the funniest and most well observed bits, the paternity episode coming second.

A bargain but many episodes will not pay and the ones that do are very jumpy. But it was nice to see the seris again. But such dissapointing quality. I would never sell a product that didn't play beauifully myself, but for the price you take a risk, I guess.

I love this series and wish they had done more and think she is a fab actress. Makes me laugh all the way through and makes you sit up and look at your own life, but in a funny Bridget Jones type of light hearted way.
