A wonderful debut, to be sure, and one that's been out of print on CD everywhere outside of Japan for far too long now. It's a great, overlooked '80s gem, fully of interesting, challenging lyrics and ambitious arrangements, which is far to rare for most debuts. Hopefully, this release will rectify the fact that all but the most die-hard Blow Monkeys fan hold this record in the esteem that I do.
But, here's my real question: to me, it's interesting that the track listing Amazon currently gives for the 1st CD is missing what ended up to be track 16, which is listed as "Atomic Lullaby" (12" Version) on the release, but on my CD+Text, it says "Atomic Lullaby" (Extended 12" Mix). It seems identical to the album version (track 3), to me. I don't own the original vinyl single, but don't even think there was an extended mix, despite the original single release having used that word in its title.
However, most Blow Monkeys compilation CDs over the years have only used the edited single mix, which is a good 1:30 shorter than the album version, and perhaps therein lies the confusion on behalf of this reissue's compilers? Even Dr Robert himself was heavily involved, apparently. Cherry Red does make mistakes a bit, and this one's completely minor, but makes me wonder. Also, the fact that Amazon's only listing 16 songs on the first CD, when there are actually 17, makes me wonder if it was a last-minute addition by Cherry Red. They've been known to do this sort of thing a bit, too. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
