Charlaine Harris has for me always been linked with vampires mysteries which are not for me, but just before Christmas I received to review a beautiful book, which was by Charlaine Harris, but announced itself as the The Lily Bard Mysteries. I just loved it.

Lily Bard lives in the town of Shakespeare. When looking for somewhere to live she fixed on this town purely because of its name. Lily Bard is a survivor, a survivor of a horrific event. Although from a loving family she just could not handle the knowledge that everyone where she had been brought up knew what had happened to her, and so she moves to somewhere new, and when people found out about her she moves again - but for now she is in Shakespeare. She works as a cleaning lady and that again gives her the freedom to work the hours she wants, where she wants, and on her own.

There are five books in this omnibus and I am glad that I read them one after the other for it has been an amazing journey with Lily. Her journey has been a painful one. She has taken steps to never again be as vulnerable as she was. True whatever we do we cannot always be totally safe but she has tried to stack the odds in her favour.

Whilst the mysteries are complex, intriguing and engaging, the strength of this volume of stories is in the journey of Lily Bard. Read it for yourself. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed these books very much 27 Jan 2011
By Barbara
Format:Hardcover
I bought this omnibus after reading Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. They were so good that I wanted to give anything she had written a try. The Lily Bard books are totally different, the only common ground being the small town America setting, which is interesting to read about when you are from the UK. Lily Bard is an unusual character, and she develops further with each book. I like Sookie Stackhouse the best (hard to beat!), but these were very enjoyable. My only gripe would be the size and weight of the book - not possible to carry in my handbag to read on the bus, that's for sure! However that's not much of a negative.

4.0 out of 5 stars A break from the Supernatural 2 Dec 2010
By Ray G
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've read quite a bit of Ms. Harris' work, some great (Sookie Stackhouse series) & some not-so-great (Harper Connelly series), so decided to try the Lily Bard mysteries. This is the first book I've read by this author that is not otherworldly (so far, haven't finished reading it yet) and it does not disappoint. If you ever wanted to pick up a Southern American accent, read this.

Shakespeares Landlord - Lily moves to the town of Shakespeare to try and set up a new quiet life as a cleaner after a vicious attack leaves her horribly scarred, physically & emotionally. All is going well until she finds the body of a neighbour. To avoid becoming a suspect herself in the murder, she starts her own investigation to find out what happened. In the meantime, her past comes to light and she starts having to learn to deal with what happened to her and begins to forge new friendships in the town including with the police chief Claude, gym owner Marshall & local GP Carrie. The plot is twisted but the humour that Ms. Harris is known for stops the story and heroine being too macabre. The series starts off slowly but soon becomes addictive.

Shakespeares Champion - When the town's up & coming bodybuilder is found dead at Lily's gym, Lily investigates in her own quiet way. This is not helped by the arrival of Jarred/Jack, a dangerous bloke who always seems on the verge of something fishy. This is a tale of tense racial relations, people not being who they pretend to be and eccentric yet dangerous middle-America families. All around a murder mystery or three. Lily's character develops nicely and she starts breaking free of her own insecurities around men and life in general. Again, good plot with a story that you wont be able to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lily Bard all in one 21 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover
As a massive Charlaine Harris fan I was really pleased to find this series. I've read the Sookie Stackhouse series (several times) and the Aurora Teagarden series, and I have to say this comes a close second to Sookie Stackhouse. I would recommend this for those who like a great mystery with a lot of depth of the characters - Lily is brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charlaine Harris is great!! 21 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have not finished this book yet but as with all her books, this is great. Some Charlaine Harris fans might be expecting super natural events or creatures, there are none. However this is still a great read and a page turner.
