Book Description

1 Oct 2009 0810982609 978-0810982604
With more than 200 of her best images reproduced in stunning tritone, including many never published before and others not seen since they appeared in the pages of the legendary "Harper's Bazaar" of the 1950s, "Lillian Bassman: Women" offers a retrospective view of an extraordinary career in photography. At 91 and still hard at work, Bassman is a beloved figure in the pantheon of fashion photographers. Her signature style, once described by Richard Avedon as making 'visible that heart-breaking invisible place between the appearance and the disappearance of things', offered a sensuous and intimate vision of modern women. Says Judith Thurman, 'Bassman's women - perennially soulful, elusively chic - have the poignancy of an endangered species'. Well-known art writer and journalist Deborah Solomon contributes an introduction. An illustrated chronology gives a cinematic overview of a remarkable life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lillian Bassman: Women 18 Jun 2011
By Ray Man
Format:Hardcover
Lillian Bassman's photographs are a 'one-off' in her unique, personal style and beautiful evocation of not only the sophisticated women and their dresses of New York/Paris of the 50's and 60's but also of this iconic period in the history of two of the world's greatest cities. Many of the images are infused with a softness of form and quasi-abstract background, this renders them with her very personal and beautiful vision; however, they are timeless and of universal appeal. This is great work, up there with the very best of today alongside Nick Night, Paolo Roversi and others, but non-the-less very, very Lillian Bassman! See examples provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly gorgeous 30 Mar 2010
By V. Tapp
Format:Hardcover
Lillian Bassmann is in a class of her own. These are not just fashion shots, they are fabulous artistic creations, some so impressionistic that they are almost abstract. They are full glamour and mystery, sometimes only hinting at the details of the clothes being modelled. I can't think of any other photographer who has done anything similar - this is an absolute must-have, even if (like me) you have little interest in fashion!
