I don't think there is anything you could want to know about growing lilies that you won't find in this book; it is amazingly comprehensive. Written throughout with the minimum of jargon, and illustrated both with photos and, where useful, with diagrams, it goes far beyond the promise of the title.
The authors start by explaining the biology of the way lilies grow and reproduce, which leads on to how to best place them in the garden. The next chapter is titled "Cultivation" and introduces us to a lifetime's accumulated wisdom on planting, aftercare, pests and diseases, after which we have "Propagation", with a well-written technical chapter full of useful tips. This is the most useful part for the average gardener.
The next section is a list of lilies by species, then one of named varieties of hybrid liles, with their descriptions, plenty of photos, and tips on which to choose for the garden. There are more lilies listed here than most of us will ever see offered for sale, but the real lily enthusiast will be well satisfied. At the very end is a section on breeding your own lilies (easier than you'd think, apparently), followed by various technical tables and appendices, a list of suppliers, and a full well-organised index.
If I have a reservation, it is that I'm not sure I'm gardener enough for this book. But that's my shortcoming, and I'd rather have info I don't need than be missing something I'm looking for. All the technical stuff is extremely well-written and easy to follow, which is a real triumph. Despite all this, the book is compact and well-designed, not a massive tome.
