Product Description

Product Description

For months the sun has burned down on Lila's Kenyan village. It is too hot to gather firewood, too hot to weed the garden, even too hot to milk the cow. Without rain the well will run dry and the crops will fail. Lila is so worried that when her grandfather whispers to her the secret of rain, she decides to go and talk to the sky herself. How Lila saves the village by telling the sky the saddest thing she knows is told in David Conway's elegant and spare prose style, which is complemented perfectly by Jude Daly's beautiful and poignant illustrations.

About the Author

David Conway was born in Ireland but moved to England as a baby, and has lived here ever since. He currently works at home, bringing up his daughter and son, and writing for children. His poetry has been published in many anthologies, including Loose Change in association with War on Want. David lives in North London.

Jude Daly was born in London and emigrated to South Africa as a young child. She went to art college in Cape Town, and now lives there with her husband, the writer and illustrator Niki Daly, and their two sons.

I bought this book after reading a number of glowing reviews from respected sources. I have not been dissapointed. Wonderful storytelling, a great and memorable protagonist and beautiful colour-drenched illustrations that do the writing justice. And it stands up well to repeated reading. I see this book standing the test of time. A joy!

Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children 27 Aug 2009
By Yana V. Rodgers - Published on Amazon.com
Lila lives in a Kenyan village that has seen no rain in several months. The crops are withering, the cattle are suffering, and the heat is so unbearable the villagers cannot do their regular work. When Lila overhears mama saying that the well has dried up, her worries grow. In desperation, she seeks her grandfather's wisdom about the secret of rain and then leaves her village to try and accomplish the impossible.

With its vivid text and lovely illustrations, Lila and the Secret of Rain tells a powerful story about the value of water and the indispensable role that it plays in sustaining our livelihoods. Teachers and parents will appreciate this book as a helpful tool for teaching children about natural resources in an African context.

This is a wonderful book about a brave young girl who saves her village from drought. The story is simple, yet magical. The illustrations are beautiful and unique. I loved it and think it would be a great book for any preschooler's collection.

This is a beautiful story about a girl who just wants to help and make things better for everyone by bringing rain to her village. I enjoy reading this with my niece who loves it especially considering her name is also Lila :)
