About the Author
Ed McBain (1926-2005) was born Salvatore Lambino in New York. He changed his name to Evan Hunter and under that name is known as the author of The Blackboard Jungle and as the writer of the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. The 87th Precinct series numbers over fifty novels. McBain was a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America and was one of three American writers to be awarded the CWA Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement.

I was very saddened to hear of Evan Hunter's death a week or so ago. In a career that was over half a century long, he produced a huge number of books under a wide variety of names, the McBain strand being the most popular. His talent was unique and his contribution to the genre inestimable; every single one of these 87th Precinct novels is special, and this one is no exception.
Like Love is an excellent book and an excellent mystery. It's briskly written, and the style if stuffed with McBain's terrific sense of humour, the writing brims with fun. His books are light and incredibly enjoyable, and - without fail - provide readers with a good mystery. The usual gang (Carella, Hawes, etc) are all here, and you could hardly hope for better company while reading a crime novel like this. Every crime fiction fan has to try McBain's wonderful books, and this is as good a place to start as any. Everything a fan could have asked for in an 87th Precinct novel.
Let's just hope Orion continue to reissue these old titles so more are available; McBain's books deserve to endure, and they certainly will.

Hooked from the opening

This one starts with a bang. A cop tries to talk a young woman off a ledge. McBain provides the usual razzle-dazzle combination of suspense and action. In the end, every clue dovetails together. It's a credit to the author that the finale is both suprising and credible.

Another good one by Ed McBain. To start with Steve Carella tries to talk a jumber off a ledge. Does he succeed????? The result ends up causing a problem later in the book. Then, Irene Thayer and Tommy Barlow are found dead in bed. Did someone kill them or was it suicide? If you read close enough you can figure it out long before Cotton Hawes does. No, I did not find it out until the end, but it is there. AS usual a book that is short, easy to read and will hold your attention. A very good mystery with a good ending. You get close to these officers and their families. McBain does well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An ok read for me. I'm not to much into Ed McBain themes, yet I thought I'd try once more and give him a try after I had read others' reviews. Now, you may find this a great mystery(killer) book. I just didn't.
