Norma Winstone's sparse presence in the available jazz catalogue is a constant source of dismay to anyone who has encountered her unique vocal talents, so the very existence of this CD is a cause for celebration. Winstone's voice is an all-encompassing instrument, with an almost superhuman range (in both the musical and emotional senses) and a depth of expression which seems to both include and transcend every variation within the tradition of jazz singing. So it is, then, that her readings of Gershwin, Brubeck or Carla Bley are as much her own work as her own compositions and co-compositions, all of which are exemplified here, with arrangements by her accompanist John Taylor--a professional and personal association which goes back many years. What in lesser hands would be no more than a collection of pretty songs is transformed into a dazzling sequence of vocal artistry which also conveys Winstone's intuitive grasp of lyrical poetics. Winstone's tone and musicality is flawless,

The Taylor/Winstone collaboration once again create a magical, highly original sound. The two complement one another, each surpassing all expectations. The album shows off Winstones pure tone and terrific range. She approaches songs with her ever avant-garde style, creating classics out of unheard songs which deserve her treatment. 'Strange Meadowlark', 'Alice In Wonderland' and 'Ladies in Mecedies' are favourites, however all the songs on this superbly crafted album are worth just as much a listen. The unique use of silence distinguishes the duo from any other around today. A duo creating astonishing results.
