5.0 out of 5 stars Simple story well told 18 Aug 2003

Format:Paperback
This is a poignant story of a father-son relationship and their bonding. An old widower is spending his time drinking, fishing and talking to his long dead wife. Quite unexpectedly, his estranged son pays him a visit. Little by little they get closer together.

You won't find two-dimensional absolute love here. This book is filled with raw and real human emotions. At times it is sad, at times funny but in the end very heart-warming. In one scene we see a father and a son trying to catch the father's hat taken off by the wind. After some running, the son finally catches the hat but ends up in the river. As they are sitting on the bank of the river one can see how they have started warming to one another. In another powerful scene father is trying to explain to son how his mother looked like, but can't (Do we remember people that we love by heart or in mind?) To not spoil your reading pleasure anymore, in one particular scene closer to the end of the book a whole complexity of love is revealed.

Wazem's art is very simple and sketchy, but never fails to express emotions of the characters. Often in just a single panel he is able to set a particular mood or convey a certain message.

Buy two copies: one for yourself and one for your father.
