Office comic 6 Sep 2011
By Sam Quixote TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
At first I was put off by the art in the book - think basic stick figures and pre-school type artwork (sorry Sarah!) - but once I got into it, I realised Sarah Herman is a storyteller using basic drawing abilities and a strong script to tell her stories of her job. This is the kind of book Harvey Pekar would have produced had he not found R. Crumb to draw for him (Pekar famously wrote his comics and drew stick figures where he thought they would be placed in the panels, then got professional artists to draw the comic properly).

The stories would be instantly recognisable to anyone who has worked in an office - performance evaluations, presentations, arguments with colleagues via email, the passing of a colleague, people leaving jobs for more exciting opportunities, and eventually leaving the job yourself.

The artwork grows on you as you read but what grabs you the most is the flow of the story which is pitch-perfect. Herman is a gifted storyteller who is able to convey somewhat average stories and turn them into a compelling comic book, much like Harvey Pekar did with his file clerk job in Cleveland.

The book reads quickly, as do many comics, but the stories stay with you and eventually make you wish there was another book or more in the series to read. Interesting and well written, "I Like My Job" is a surprisingly good comic book and great fun to read.

We all spend so much time caught up in the rituals of work - meetings, performance reviews, paperwork - that we forget just how weird this world we spend so much of our lives in.

"I Like My Job" is a witty, funny yet deeply compassionate look at the life of work. I found myself nodding in recognition at so many of the situations in this book.

Described through clear, effective art the book explores the world of work in a way that will resonate with anyone who has ever worked in an office or with a team or wondered just what on earth their last performance review had to do with anything.

This is one of those books which I find myself returning to and every time I do I take away something new. Highly recommended.

I Like This Book 21 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
A brilliantly sharp and funny dissection of office life - anyone who works in an office will recognise this world: the corporate bull, the day to day grind, the performance reviews... Beautifully minimalist black and white line drawings capture richly observational work-place angst in a charming and sometimes wryly brutal way. Perfect for any coffee table but even better as a colleague's leaving gift - funny words to go with funny pictures.
