Product Description

Product Description

Faced with a desperately hard battle against cancer, Ivan decided he would like to share his experiences with readers of the BBC News website. He hoped it could help demystify a disease that touches so many lives, and would allow people across the world to discuss the disease and share their experiences. From then, Ivan wrote a regular, deeply moving diary outlining his battle against the tumour. He endured two major brain operations, chemotherapy and various experimental treatments in his extraordinary fight for survival. He also married his German born girlfriend and they celebrated the birth of their second child. Throughout the two years, the diary received thousands of e-mails from people around the world. Many of them are published in this book. It is impossible to read them without being deeply moved - messages of support to Ivan, people's experiences, stories of hope. One of the most remarkable aspects of the regular diary has been this amazing coming together of so many people around the world.

Moving 3 May 2005

Format:Paperback
I followed Ivan's diaries from the outset on the BBC News website. This book is a superb memorial to the courage and strength he showed, well put together with additional comments from his diary readers. A moving tribute. Also, all royalties go to the Medecins Sans Frontieres UK.

inspirational 8 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I was one of the thousands who followed Ivan's progress for two and a half years in his column on the BBC news website, and I remember being inspired and even uplifted by his refusal to bow out and surrender to the tumour which was slowly taking over.

There were high points and low points- times when it seemed he was going to beat it, and others when it became clear he wasn't; and I'll never forget the entry just after the birth of his son- but, though there was never even a hint of "look at me, I'm so brave," Ivan managed to keep his optimism going nearly all the time, and his sense of humour never deserted him.

It is precisely the openess and honesty with which he let us look in on his life that makes his story so compelling and so moving, and which made the news of his death so hard to take: even though I never met him, I felt I had lost a dear friend.

Hope... 6 Jun 2005

Format:Paperback
This book inspires hope for people suffering from any illness. Ivan was a truly gifted human being, and the book, which covers some of his online diary on the BBC is really just a brief look at his fight, and boy did he fight !
