3.0 out of 5 stars 16 songs, not 17 30 Jun 2006
Format:Audio CD
Don't be fooled: Kevin Sheild's 'Country Girl' isn't on the disc (not unless there's a LONG wait after Track 16) as appears on the Amazon tracklisting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spurious compilation with some excellent songs 7 Oct 2006
By russell clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I can confirm what the previous reviewer has already pointed -namely that "City Girl " by Kevin Shields is not included here -which is a shame but there you go .We all make mistakes , goodness knows I'm not exempt. As anyone who has read some of my reviews will no doubt confirm. Anyway that isn't the only mistake as the track order on Amazon is also wrong but that's no big deal.

This is a spurious compilation (based around the scene dubbed shoe gazing, a catch it all title to represent bands around in the early nineties who spent most of their performances hiding behind floppy fringes and playing while staring morosely down at their feet) and normally I loathe them like George W Bush loathes Pretzels but this has some tremendous songs on it so with typical hypocrisy I have purchased it.

"Pearl" by Chapterhouse is a glorious kaleidoscopes of gyrating guitars, breathy vocals, whip sharp percussion and cooing girly backing. Ride's "Like A Daydream" crashes against the barricades like waves of mercury -jagged, thrilling and as tuneful as a kids TV theme coated in aspic. "Black Metallic "is the Catherine Wheel's finest moment, a mesmerising collision of six string peaks and troughs, set to a bleary delicious melody. The same can be said for Blind Mr Jones "Over My Head " a song I have always held in the highest esteem and which adds a hypnotic bass line to the equation. "Suzanne " by Moose throws off notes like a face full of freezing ultra fine rain and "Sweetness And Light " by Lush oscillates colours like a rainbow mutating and exploding. Mercy Seat" by Ultra Vivid Scene is a different version to the original album version -longer slightly rambling but still curiously addictive.

I take issue with some of the choices for other artists though.
