I pre-ordered "Like an Old Fashioned Waltz - Deluxe" a while back. Last Friday I remembered that I had and thought I'd better cancel. I already owned the original and thought this was a bit of a waste of money. But I was too late, the order had already shipped. I'm so pleased.

Understand where I'm coming from here. I'm what the Aussies would call a Sandy Denny "tragic". I was mildly in love with her as a teenager in the early 70's, and although I grew up and my crush on her faded, I still love her music. My biggest regret is that I never saw her play live.

CD1 is the original album, remastered, and a couple of bonus tracks, Walking the Floor Over You and a piano only version of No End. CD2 consists of alternate takes of the same songs without strings and a demo version of Whispering Grass - good stuff. There's some recordings from BBC sessions and a version of Whispering Grass sung on Dutch TV. Who Knows Where the Time Goes sung on a John Peel show also pops up.

The remastering emphasises the lushness of the original CD. When I think that my first copy of this album was on cassette and that I used to listen to it on a portable cassette player with the tinniest speakers you can think of...well the difference is sublime. Is the sound better than the Last CD version? I believe it is. It feels warmer and richer. Sandy's voice has never sounded better - warm, clear, strong without being overpowering (as I know it could sometimes be). The alternate takes on CD2 sound good too and, as the sleeve notes say, provide a more intimate feeling. I think I actually prefer the non-strings version of Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, just her voice, a piano, bass, and very quiet drums.

Highly recommended 7 July 2012

Remember the Mid-East oil crisis? That's what held back the release of Sandy's third solo album, "Like An Old Fashioned Waltz"! The wait was well worth it. In fact, if I recall, it was released in the U.S. before it was released in the U.K. I remember it was distributed by Capitol here, but still on the "Island" imprint. At any rate, like "Sandy", the sound this time around is breathtaking. The first track, "Solo" is another vehicle for guitar virtuoso Richard Thompson to showcase his excellent playing. It's funny how we can distance ourselves from those we love the most. The song has had a profound effect on me for nearly all my life. The big band swings on "Whispering Grass", right down to Danny Thompson's dog house. Diz Dizzley's guitar comes through very clear this time, as well as Sandy's poignant vocal. On the title track, for the first, time I can hear the sweeping brushes keeping the 3/4 rhythm. Harry Robinson's string arrangements are more defined on this album, a return to form from what he did on "North Star Grassman". Of the originals, "Carnival" and "No End" are heretofore Sandy's ultimate epic songs. The former was at least started when Sandy was in her mid-teens in 1966. The latter is a lengthy (but far from boring) conversation between a traveler and painter. The conversational lyric on this one is especially sharp. Robinson's work on these two are compelling, longing, engaging. The listener becomes totally involved. "Dark The Night" and "At The End Of The Day" are like two perfect bookends. "Until the Real Thing Comes Along" goes back to Fats Waller, which Sandy admits that she listened to as a child. The arrangement is pure jazz at its finest and Sandy sings it like the pro she always was. From the "Who Knows..." box set released back in what? Late 70's? Early 80's?, comes this version of "Walking The Floor Over You", a hit for Pat Boone in 1960, and Sandy rocks this Ernest Tubb classic like a switched-on Connie Francis. Again, Richard works his magic...

Demos, BBC and even a Dutch TV performance of "Whispering Grass" grace Disc 2. String-less versions of the appropriate songs reveal the heart and soul of the songs. Especially telling is the BBC recording of "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" with the big band intact! All in all it's well worth the price and I highly recommend it.

I'm annoyed at the sloppily cobbled together second cd, obviously added simply to jack up the price of the original. The seller might have caught me this time, but I will not make any further purchases from him.
