Biography

After stars reach a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their personas. Madonna is such a star. She rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle became more common. However, one of Madonna's ... Read more in Amazon's Madonna Store

In March, 1989 Madonnas long-awaited, Like A Prayer was released to the public and critics eagerly sharpened their pencils. Multiply produced by the pop diva herself, Steve Bray and Patrick Leonard, the album would encapsulate a striking of mixture of styles that ranged from Pop, Dance, Soul and even on occasions, Gospel. Like A Prayer (1989) quite possibly was her greatest album of the 1980's.

The title track, Like A Prayer had startling undertones of spiritual and religious commentary that was both profound but controversial in its day where the stunning video of this classic where Madonna is seen dancing in front of several burning crosses was banned from T.V after just one screening. Still Madonna had made her mark and this fantastic classic raced to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite steering into a gospel sound, the song is still highly sexually charged, highly danceable whilst she is backed by a string of angelic sounding gospel singers that was conducted by Andre Couch which merley heightened its blatant spiritual nature. One of Madonnas most definitive classics!

The undertones of hot, pulsating funk on the playful, Express Yourself proved that Madonna hadn't lost her impeccable touch for making great, infectious, jamming dance musi. The track would become a cross-Atlantic Top 10 seller.

The album then takes a plunge with the surprisingly dire, Love Story on which she duetted with dynamic pop singer, Prince. Love Story is a blatant waste of opportunity as these are such fine and diverse talents that were amongst the most important figures of twentieth century music. The mid-tempo beat careers along at a sleepy pace and petters out in nothing.

Ok, so I've been a Madonna fan for almost as long as she's been at the top of our charts - which is almost 25 years!

She has released a hell of a lot of music in that time. From the early days of what would become dance music (Holiday, Everybody, Lucky Star, Physical Attraction) to her classic 80's era (Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, Who's That Girl) to this, her pre-"Blond Ambition" days.

If I had to put her albums into any sort of order - either "best", "most iconic" or "most defining Madonna", then Like A Prayer would definitly be in not only mine, but most people's top 3! The title track Like A Prayer is classed as many peoples most defining Madonna song, with titles like Vogue, Music, Into The Groove, Papa Don't Preach and Hung Up following closly behind.

We all remember the famous/infamous Pepsi ad. Madonna, dark haired for the first time since Live Aid, dancing on the street and getting down with the choir. Then we remember the video. Burning crosses, a black Jesus, the stigmata and the crime. All of which could have easily overshadowed the album and title track if it was anyone else. But with the music and performer being this powerful, NOTHING could overshadow it no matter how controversial.

This album is Madonna at one of many peaks of her career. The others being the release of Like A Virgin, the 1990 Blond Ambition tour, the release of Ray Of Light, her amazing 2004 Re-Invention Tour and 2005's Confessions On A Dancefloor album at al.

The production on Like A Prayer is amazing.

Like A Prayer is the album that proved Madonna could make pop music- believable, heartfelt and chockoblock full of emotion.
From the Beatlesesque little girl lost feel on Dear Jessie to the heartbreaking ballad of regret and fatherly love/hate- Oh Father- each track is adult pop at its finest.
Keep It Together and Express Yourself send you spinning from the tearful songs and back onto the dancefloor! That's the great thing about this terrific album, it has a song for each mood.
If you got into Madonna via Ray Of Light and you need some classic Madonna tunes to keep you listening until Music is released, then Like A Prayer is for you!
If you don't already own it, why not? Like Michael Jackson's Off The Wall, this classic album proved Madonna's worth as an artiste and a musical icon.
Cherish this.

It is unfortunate that so many people judge Madonna by her image rather than her music. Even among those who listen to her music, some quickly spot her limited vocal range and instantly decide that she can't be any good. All those people are missing out on one of the finest – as well as one of the most successful – singers in the history of pop music. Although this album is not my favorite Madonna album, it is the kind of album that only Madonna could have recorded. Perhaps more than any other, it shows why Madonna should be taken seriously as a singer-songwriter of true quality.
The album yielded four top five UK hits, these being Like a prayer (which made number one), Express yourself, Cherish and Dear Jessie. In the USA, Dear Jessie was apparently not released as a single but Oh father and Keep it together both were. Oh father was not originally released as a UK single, but made the UK top twenty in 1996 following its release to promote the compilation, Something to remember. On the assumption that you are familiar with most of these songs, I'll focus on the others.
Love song (a duet with Prince that the two of them co-wrote), although interesting in its own way, does not quite live up to its billing. You would think that a duet featuring the two hottest pop singers of their day would be an automatic choice for a single. It wasn't even released as a single because there are several other songs that are stronger – actually, all the other songs are stronger except Act of contrition, the brief final track that features Madonna talking over the reversed tune of the title track.
Till death do us part is a very sad song about a violent marriage, but with an up-tempo melody that hides the real meaning of the song. This kind of paradox is not unusual in pop music.
