Not since reading Lilly my Lovely (LENA KENNEDY)
have i cried so much reading a book You feel Eileens total dispair at the end of the book yes the ending is a cliffhanger and you will need to buy the other books, i would put these books in the same league as Lillian Harrys "April Grove"
books and if you enjoy them you are sure to enjoy
these, i have to say i am now a true fan of Maureen Lee and can't wait to read more of her books.

I read this book twice, just to make sure I had not missed anything. I then went on a trail to buy the sequel. The book was fantastic. I cried at the sad happenings and laughed along with all the characters on a good day. This is the best book I have ever read. I actually felt that i was a part of the happenings. Fantastic.

Don't buy this book unless you're prepared to buy the follow up books, Put out the Fires and Stepping Stones. They are SO good. Maureen Lee writes it as it was:- according to my mother who lived through these times and started to cry a couple of chapters into the books as she could remember how it felt. You have been warned! Tissues to the ready! Anyone who enjoys a good family saga brilliantly written will be totally immersed in these books.

I have read many WW2 novels, and this one was very good. I gained a different perspective learning about what the citizens in Bootle, Liverpoole went through during the war.

Anyone looking for a family saga please do not miss this. It's Maureen Lee at her best. Will now order the next two in the series. They are the stories which can be read several times without getting boring. Always something different to discover each time they are read.

What a superb book written about the feelings of the inhabitants of Pearl St. As you read you almost know what will happen next but that does not detract from the enjoyment of escaping for a while in its story.

It's ending was expected also with the frustration of knowing that Eileen' s life has been turned upside down and that of her young son Tony by the deceitful Francis yet again. All you want is for them both to live happy ever after with Nick. Perhaps the next book in the series may shed light on that scenario.
