Book Description

21 July 2001
Lighthouses exert a special fascination: to mariners they are a constant reminder of the perils of the sea; for the rest of us they are places of romantic isolation. This comprehensive study traces the history and development of the lighthouse from the birth in Alexandria and relates the fascinating myths and legends surrounding them. For each of the six geographical regions covered, the author recreates the history of 231 lighthouses and beacons, and explores the maritime activities of which they were the focus.

This is a stunning book, whether you're seriously interested in lighthouses or you just love breathtaking land-and-seascape photography. My wife's a lighthouse nut, so it was the perfect Christmas gift for her a few years ago. "Trebiere" to the French authors!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning tour-de-force of photogenic quality 4 Dec 2001
By A Customer
For those used to seeing lighthouses from a land perspective, Lighthouses of the Atlantic provides sweeping photgraphic panoramas of lighthouses from the sea, often though mountainous seas.
The depth of perspective is matched by the colour printing, and the spume of wave is captured as lighthouses - built in amaziningly awkward places by strength of engineering - are captured in a camera's eye for wonderment.
A major point is that technical details of 150 Atlantic lighthouses are provided. The downside is that evocative still and silent views or wild and windswept stormy seas are divided by the book's spine. And even larger format, perhaps? Robert King
