4.0 out of 5 stars HOT OFF THE PRESS, this super NEW story, 5 Mar 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
in the Lighthouse Keeper series of books, from Ronda and David Armitage.

From the back cover:-

`Mr Grinling likes to look for mermaids on his days off. But the golden-haired creature he spots on a rock isn't quite what he expected....'

Small paperback with 64 high quality shiny pages, in the popular 2-page spread format. Superb illustrations throughout, as usual.
Smaller size text, aimed at confident readers, but this is also a delightful book to read aloud. Super book, further enhanced by occasional speech bubbles and those other regulars....the three seagulls!

Example of text:-

`Mr and Mrs Grinling lived with their cat, Hamish, in a little white cottage perched high on the cliffs. Mr Grinling was a part-time lighthouse keeper. He shared the work with his assistant, Sam.
It was Monday and Monday was Mr Grinling`s day off. Mrs Grinling was bustling about the kitchen and Mr Grinling was getting in the way.
Well, Mrs Grinling thought he was getting in the way. Mr Grinling thought he was quietly eating his toast.
"Please eat faster, Mr G," said Mrs Grinling. "It's only three weeks until Sam`s wedding and I haven't done any of the cooking."
Oh yummy," said Mr Grinling. "I`ll help."
"No, thank you, said Mrs Grinling. "You're a lovely man, Mr G, but a dreadful cook. You're much better at eating. Why don't you go and look for a mermaid instead?".....'

Meanwhile Sam spots something unusual down at Wild Horses Bay.
And with Mrs G pre-occupied with her wedding food list, Mr G decides to go surfing.....and seeking a mermaid...but.... eventually comes back with something quite different, much to Mrs G`s horror!

An adventurous, complex tale, with some ups and downs.... but all is well that ends well.......except, maybe .... for Hamish, who is not quite so happy with the seemingly satisfactory compromise of this story!
