A delayed flight from London to New York gave me time to speed read Mike's book. Then when we finally took off I spent the next few hours churning out reams of notes and ideas. Yet the book frustrated and delighted me in equal measure, largely because the author's thinking style is different to mine, and that comes through in his writing style. His ideas come thick and fast from all directions, whereas I'm more linear and wanted to explore them at an even deeper level. There is a structure to the book, and things are ordered into 4 distinct phases, yet at times I felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of ideas that were being thrown at me. I would have preferred some of these to have been held back for another book (or several books), and used the space to explore some of the core ideas more deeply. Having said that, the ideas I did pick up were extremely valuable. Pages 76 and 77 for example set me off scribbling for more than an hour; and the ideas generated from those two pages alone, for me more than justify the purchase of this book.

Great read. Was surprised how much value was packed into Light your Firebrand. Literally EVERYTHING you need to know about marketing is in here. I really like the 4 Rs, the tips, tricks and shortcuts to take. You can take the book and review your branding strategy, get clear on your brand values, work out how to put yourself out there and how your messaging and pitch reflects your brand values consistently. I am busy working through it as I review my company's branding. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn all the secrets of branding that big brand agencies don't want to tell you.

Inspirational and doable 16 April 2011

I'm no longer in financial services but have a small craft-based business looking for new ways to make an impact. I found this book really accessible, full of ways I can rethink my branding and marketing and differentiate myself from the hundreds of other craft businesses out there by projecting the essence of what I stand for. The exercises are entirely doable, even if you're not a big corporate. However, what impressed me even more was the positivity which came through from every page - if you pick that up and run with it you'll be the business to thrive.
