Product Description

An introduction to the use of light for students and visual artists, this is the first book to look at the way light can be used to create realistic and fantastical effects in a wide range of visual media. Light for Visual Artists is a valuable resource for animators, digital illustrators, painters or artists working in any medium. The first part of the book discusses the fundamental properties of natural and artificial light, shadows, the interaction of light on different types of surfaces, reflections, as well as transparency, translucency and the effects of light on colour. In part two, the author concentrates on people and the environment, looking in detail at how to observe the effects of light to create realistic images. In part three the author looks at the creative use of light in composition and design, for creating moods or setting a scene. Clearly written by a practising illustrator, this book is a must-have for both students and practising artists.

By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Length: 1:06 Mins
This is a useful book authored by Richard Yot to help artists understand light.

It's 176 pages and is pretty comprehensive. The chapters are split into three categories. The first looks at the basic lighting fundamentals, which are the basic principles of light and shadows, their qualities, colours and how we perceive surfaces. The second looks at lighting with people and environment. The last looks at specific uses of lighting for staging and composition, setting mood and giving the illusion of time and place.

The text is clear and detailed. There are lots of photos, 3D computer generated images, a few drawn art, and some film stills in later chapters.

It's interesting to read about things we see daily and don't really think about why they look that way. Examples like why some wet surfaces are darker, how the colour of the sky changes throughout the day, finding the true colour of shadows.

It's not a tutorial book so you won't learn any techniques. It's a theory book that highlights those principles so that you can make use of them to create more realistic and believable work. The principles can be easily applied to other medium.

This is not the only book around on light. If you're more of a traditional artist, I recommend checking out James Gurney's Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter. Many of the topics are similar bot James Gurney's book added colour schemes and other subjects more useful to artists.

If you're into digital lighting, check out Jeremy Birn's Digital Lighting and Rendering (2nd Edition). I no longer have this book so I can't remember anything much except that it's also a very good book. Not sure about similar topics.

Excellent book 21 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Best thing I've read yet on drawing light. Makes you a) go around for days afterwards really NOTICING light b) appreciate physics. Sharp, observant explanations of how different light sources bounce around and affect their surroundings; and tips on how to draw this. Ought to be a standard text in art schools.

No Longer Left in the Dark 3 Jun 2011
By Tanaka - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just graduating from college with a degree in art. I was still left in the dark about a few things ,which I had to take upon myself to learn. Well, lighting was one of them, and to put simply, you cannot become a skilled illustrator without learning about light. Yet, so many books and individuals make it abstract when they explain it; you wonder if they even know what they are talking about or want it to remain a mystery. I was hoping to find a book to explain it in clearer terms, and gave up hope after so many failed attempts. Finally, one of my friend's told me about Richard Yot's 'Light for Visual Artists', and it was a eye opener for me! I couldn't put this book down when I received it! This book is not a step by step book (excluding some exercises), but it's more of understanding of why light does what it does, and to put simply, it's refreshing to have a book do that. The examples he provides are excellent and help avoid confusion. After going through this book you will be able to apply the light principles learned to any forms of art (photography, 3D, etc). Of course, a book like this is not a one time read, since lighting can get a little technical, it may require another read or skim through, and then, used as reference when practicing. Overall, this is a must buy for any artist who wants to finally grasp a professional understanding of light. I applaud Richard Yot for making such an excellent book, and I hope to see many more published works in the future. He's such a brilliant individual to help growing artists such as myself.

All you need, if not in the best order 28 Jun 2011
By E. Shealy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book includes all you really need to know about light and color as an artist. The information would be as useful to a photographer or someone interested in film (for example, it covers things like three-point lighting and its alternatives) as it would be to a painter. That said, this is not a book about color mixing for painting, digital color, or other more medium-specific topics.

The topics covered include the dimensions of color, the interaction of different kinds of lighting (it explains the difference between softer and harder light sources for example) with different kinds of surfaces (including transparent and reflective surfaces), design (basic things like contrast), and the colors of many typical kinds of lighting (for different times of day or weather in outdoor scenes, for example). There's really more in there than I can list in this review, as it's a pretty meaty book with a wealth of detail.

The order in which the topics were presented struck me as a bit off. For example, the section on indoor and outdoor lighting types came oddly early while the section on the dimensions of color came relatively late. I feel like some of the early information relied on the things you'd learn later in the book, so this is one of those books you may want to read out of order, or skim once and read again.

In spite of that weirdness, I went with a five because the book is so insanely complete on most of the topics it covers, and because so much of this information is so rare in art books that really ought to have it.
