Product Description

A sparkling comedy drama set in a World War II British Army Searchlight Squad who are a rag-tag bunch of misfits who pull together in the country s hour of need under the direction of Lt Ogelby (Ian Carmichael). Although the cast is littered with comedians, the tone and setting of the movie is comic but moving in its portrayal of ordinary British men thrown together in extraordinary times.

Tommy Steele not singing, Benny Hill not joking (much) - but they and the rest of the cast put in engaging character study performances. I would think serving on the coastal defences was much like this in 1942. I found this a very pleasant trip down my father's memory lane. (Dad was on the Bofor guns.) Leather boots in the English countryside. Interesting story lines keep it running, some pathos, always lighthearted.

A surprising delight 17 April 2009

I heard about this film from a friend. Never heard of it before, but I thought I'd give it a go... And what a mini delight. I found myself grinning and chuckling from the start with the snappy dialogue circling about the soldier's hut. Benny Hill was actually a fine actor - perhaps later stiffled by his TV shows. But there is also some nice touching moments inbetween the gentle humour. Ok, maybe it's not as finely honed and sleek to what it could've been. It's tight budget and the period it was made sometimes shows, but don't let it detract. What it does highlight is finely drawn characters we're allowed to get to know. And how often modern day films now miss this target with too many vapid visuals, bad language and unsettling and annoying fast edits... Some latter days of course might find it a bit slow. But at least it leaves an emotional resonance and memory. And how many of these fast paced popcorn films these days are actually cabable of doing that?

Benny Hill appeared in 'Light up the Sky' along side some of British Cinemas greats, headed by the iconic Ian Carmichael, and, he proves in this one, he really could act. It's such a shame there were no follow ups! From here on, Hill concentrated on television, only appearing in the very occasional 'cameo' role in things like 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' and 'The Italian Job'.But, if you want a reminder of how things might have been, this is the film to get! A war time comedy/drama about the men who man the searchlights, helping to protect Britain from arial attack, you wont see 'Fred Scuttle' in this, in fact, those who haven't seen Benny Hill act in a straight role before, are in for a very pleasant surprise! Recommended!
