Product Description

Product Description

A dark novelette, set in near-future Paris, where vampires and werewolves are hunted like rabid dogs and put down just as quickly. Their existence is common knowledge, the army and police patrol the streets looking for them, families barricade themselves at night, and even the Catholic Church has its own task force. The majority of the population has been vaccinated, making their blood highly poisonous. What little remains of the vampire society is now reduced to dealing untainted blood like drugs, living in hiding, owning clean human slaves to drink from, and generally living a pathetic life.

Amidst the chaos, a clan-less vampire who has been starving for too long does his best to survive, mugging and stealing goods in order to feed himself. His only real link with humanity is a woman he lost years ago. As he checks up on her one night, he finds her missing, and all hell breaks loose.

(Length: novelette/novella, ~30 pages)

(Cover art and design by Boden Steiner. theaugmental.carbonmade.com )

(A shorter version of this story was originally published in Eternal Night: A Vampire Anthology, Living Dead Press, 2010)

5.0 out of 5 stars Feeding the Need, 4 Mar 2011
This review is from: A Light To Starve By (Kindle Edition)
"A Light To Starve By" by Axel Taiari is not only one of the best stories I've ever read, it's probably in my personal top five of vampire stories ever written, and considering that some of those stories, the top five ones, are novels, well, this one here's something else. And it's only perfect that it is a vampire story.

Vampires are sexy, right? Isn't that what we've been lead to believe, the image we've been fed? Considering that "A Light To Starve By" is as vibrant as blood gushing down your arm, all beautiful against your skin, and streaming into your mouth then coursing through your veins and thrusting life eternal upon you, the story itself, to say the least, is sexy. And who doesn't like sexy? Then there's its mind-shaker inducements.

Reading "A Light To Starve By" feels like being thirteen and reading this brilliantly crazy novel about heroin addicts thousands of miles from where you sit, like being eight and discovering where this whole Dracula thing started then seeking out everything else that's been published by the author of that work, like being five and and wondering if you want a night-light after all, if Poe maybe left a candle burning through the night. It's that fresh new voice thing. Taiari, his voice, it's one you've been waiting for.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Light to Starve By, 23 Nov 2011

This review is from: A Light To Starve By (Kindle Edition)
It seems vampire tales are everywhere these days. Sometimes they are almost like "one of us" (maybe even prime boyfriend or girlfriend material), while others they're the enemy of humans. In "A Light to Starve By" they are the enemy, yet it is much different because the protagonist is a vampire, setting the reader up to sympathize and root for him - not because he is, or despite him being, a vampire, but due to his human qualities. Taiari does a great job in quickly acclimating the reader to his imaginary world, and ramping up the action to the story's conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great short story., 22 July 2011
This review is from: A Light To Starve By (Kindle Edition)
This is probably one of the best short stories that I've ever read. Vampire stories are usually boring and cliche ridden, however, A Light To Starve By is very different. The story is gripping, the descriptions are incredibly vivid, and the author even manages to get you to sympathise with the protagonist without justifying his actions. It's well worth the few pennies that it costs.
