Format:Audio CD
From the start of the album, it is clear that Spocks Beard are one of a kind. Bringing influences from the likes of Yes, Rush and Pink Floyd, and melding them with a fresh, up to date sound, Spocks Beard create something wholly original. At times, this album could only be described as obscure, the strange keyboard sounds and guitar melodies combine well to create something that could be from a computer game, or a jazz band. Unlike virtuoso bands such as Dream Theater, Spocks Beard concentrate more on the actual music rather than the complete mastery of their instruments, and come off well because of it. The vocals are perfect and the instruments combine to give a tremendous example of what is to come from their consequent albums. I would recommend this to anyone with an open mind towards music, Spocks Beard will be a band that you either love or hate, anyone who likes something fresh, or anyone with a lingering taste for the 70's will enjoy. A top notch album in all departments and wholly recommended.

“The Light” was Spock’s Beard first album and emphatically set their mark on the progressive rock music scene. This was an audacious beginning, the album containing three epic tracks all over 12 minutes in length. The maturity and distinctiveness of the songwriting from Neal Morse was clear from the start. This was a band who wanted to take the classic progressive sounds of Yes and Genesis into a more modern rock setting. This they did and with style. They would produce some great albums, but “The Light” is special in that few bands have produced such a strong first album. Highlights are the beautifully sumptuous “Go the Way You Go” and the powerful “On the Edge” with it’s piano opening recalling Genesis’s “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”. This re-issue is remastered from the original tapes and the CD is in HDCD format. The sound quality is far superior to the original release. There is more punch and detail to the sound. Instruments come out of the mix which I hadn’t heard before. Like the other re-issues in InsideOut’s re-release programme, the booklet has insightful notes by Neal Morse on the recording of the album. And like the other albums, this release is thoroughly recommended.

the light has rapidly become one of my favorite albums, and in my humble opinion is one of the best prog albums out there today. it holds it's own with the likes of 2112, close to the edge, moving pictures and the fragile. clocking in at just under an hour with only four tracks it is a real prog album, the bass and synths combine with fantastic drumming and guitar that could cut through steel. each track is a classic. it's also fair to say that spock's beard would not exist without rush, yes, genesis, pink floyd and the beatles (but lets face it, an awful lot of bands wouldn't exist without the beatles), but with that said a lot of those bands haven't made an album as good as the light since their hayday. put simply if your into yes, rush, genesis etc and you don't own this album- you're missing out.
