Product Description

Review

'This is the first book I have seen on photographic lighting that is worth using as a text. Light-Science and Magic is about principles, not cheap tricks or the authors' portfolio. Thanks.'---Pete Christman, Savannah College of Art and Design. 'An excellent guide to high-quality studio-style lighting, even on location.'---John Alderson, Booklist.

Product Description

This highly respected text, now in paperback, has been thoroughly updated and revised. It introduces a logical theory of photographic lighting - one that teaches beginning photographers to predict results before setting up lights. This is not primarily a how-to book with only set examples for photographers to follow. Rather, "Light: Science and Magic" provides the reader with a comprehensive theory of the nature and principles of light to allow individual photographers to use lighting to express their own creativity. Numerous photographs and illustrations provide clear examples of the theories delineated within the text, while sidebars highlight special lighting questions. Although styles of photographic lighting continue to change, "Light: Science and Magic" does not go out of fashion because it is not based on style; rather it is based on the behavior of light. These principles will not change until fundamental physics does. It is now in paperback. It is a highly respected text on lighting theory covering the principles, applications, and equipment for informed lighting decisions. The sidebars highlight special lighting questions.

Anyone intimidated or confused by the subject of artificial/studio lighting must read this book. Very well prepared and very objective. The author describes how lighting WORKS, not how HE does it. Text is filled with numerous example photos and lighting diagrams. No experience with lighting is necessary to appreciate this book, but a solid photography background and a little understanding of physics helps. Top Notch.

Excellent guide 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
An excellent guide on how to exploit direct and diffuse light to obtain the best image of a subject. The book enfasizes on the response of different surface materials to different lightings. Objects made of glass, metal and wood are considered, and also different shapes. The book is easely read because the basic principles are simple and the book expands upon them illustrating ideas that anyone could think by himself but almost nobody takes the time to explore in details and rigorously.
I consider this book an introduction to a higher level of understanding and mastering of light and lighting.
