Jose Feliciano made a career out of improving on other people's songs. The reason? He was able to bring out feelings and emotions that the original, less gifted, musicians were unable to comprehend.
The Doors' Light My Fire is as essential as Feliciano's, but Jose surpasses The Mammas and the Papas with California Dreamin'.
For one thing, this song about loneliness sounds better by a solo singer than a quartet. For another, Feliciano's vocal skills match his famed guitar playing. In actual fact, aside from Pegao, the instrumentals tend to be the low points here.
What is surprising is how good Feliciano's own compositions are - Stay with Me, Chico and the Man, Rain and Daytime Dreams, a real gem worth the cost of this cut-price CD alone.
The liner notes mention an unreleased version of Cream's Sunshine of Your Love. Where is it?

The album opens with an inspired cover of Light My Fire. Far more filled with soul and life than The Doors' original, even though it is much lighter. California Dreamin' is delicate and powerful with a lovely twist towards the end. A pleasant surprise, for me, was the cover of Nature Boy - recently revitalised in Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge". Feliciano's voice is creamy, light and generally quite beautiful. As for the guitar playing, it is shown off best in Pegao, which I defy anyone to listen to without getting the urge to clap along to the flamenco-style, driving beat.
Feliciano's own compositions complement the covers well, to complete truly lovely and well-balanced album with a good mix of ballads, rock and flamenco-style tracks.

I owned this album about 30 years ago and lost it about 20 years ago. I have just found myself singing California Dreaming and Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying, word for word with every intonation (I'm sure it would have sounded terrible to an eavesdropper)and have signed straight on to Amazon to see if it is still around. This is the most beautiful album I have ever owned (along with Van Morrison). Jose Feliciano pulls at my heart strings like no other artist and his guitar playing is sublime. As soon as I receive my copy I shall get in my car and drive for miles, probably with tissue breaks in between. Sorry its a bit girlie but nothing transports me back to my youth like his music.

I found myself longing for Jose Feliciano and couldn't resist the price on this collection. What a treat! The songs cover a broad range of his early music from his breakout song, Light My Fire, a wonderful reinterpretation of the Doors classic, to his glowing theme song for Chico and the Man. In between, Feliciano does a couple of fine guitar instrumentals of classic Beattles tunes, a bright recasting of Sunny and a playful adaptation of California Dreamin'. This is classic Feliciano, the troubadour of the 70's who captured the breezy feel of the decade, which still feels so fresh today.

This is one of my all time favourite albums. Great for the car and one I always love to listen to. His music is timeless and as cool as if it were just written. You have probably heard most of these numbers anyway on the radio from time to time. Fantastic too for a romantic evening in with someone.

Feliciano used to be on TV quite a lot in the late 60s and, as a youngster, I was very intrigued by him and his unique style, voice and delivery - he also looked extremely 'cool' - however, it took till now for me to buy an album but I wished I had done it years ago; it is superb. He sings clearly, every word is heard of the wonderful lyrics he sings, from Lennon and McCartney's poignant 'In My Life', to a superb version of Gerry Marsden's 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying', and his self-penned songs: 'Stay with Me' has become an instant favourite of mine. The treatment of all these well-known songs sounds so fresh and interesting, just so different. I am now going to buy more of his albums. Highly recommended.

This is one cracking CD. A really good collection of Feliciano's heartfelt serenades with the odd instrumental, all in digital perfection, perfect in the car, living room, study or kitchen. A megabuy.
