Five BEAUTIFUL Stars! Brazil's superb jazz star Eliane Elias' latest CD combines all of the talents that have made the composer, arranger, singer, and pianist a musical giant for over 20 years on the worldwide jazz and Brazilian popular music (MPB) stages. The music is quite diverse coming from the rock, soul, MPB, and jazz worlds, but her velvety voice singing in English and Portuguese and her hard-swinging piano solos make it all flow beautifully from song to song in a mesmerizing total musical experience. I remember seeing her twice on her first nationwide USA tour many years ago in LA at Catalina's and later that year at DC's Blues Alley and the lady, who brought Herbie Hancock to tears the first time he heard her, was already her own musical force and an instant star. And now with over 20 recordings to her discography, this CD shows her artistry is as strong and fresh as ever. Eliane's hip version of Dorival Caymmi's "Rosa Morena" (Dark Rose) kicks off the recording and swings harder than Nana Caymmi's original take. "Light My Fire", "Take Five" (with Randy Brecker on trumpet), and "My Cherie Amor" become romantic ballads sung with a soft sizzle accentuated by her outstanding keyboard solos. "Toda Menina Baiana" (All Bahian Girl) with special guest Gilberto Gil and Gil's "Bananeira" (Banana Tree) with a great piano solo are swinging and marvelous MPB. And, my favorite, Eliane's own beguiling ballad "Made in Moonlight" becomes over five minutes of pure, jazzy wonder.Read more ›

Having heard some of this on Jazz FM, this is the perfect accompaniment to warm summer days and the sound of Brazil infuses every tune - even those that didn't start that way.

Eliane Elias is a well-respected Jazz pianist who has married and played with some of the top players on the US Jazz scene. Her current husband Marc Johnson provides gorgeous double bass tone and wonderful rhythmic sense to every track - but here the focus is on Elias as a singer in the style familiar to those who love the music of Brazil.

Even a cool Jazz standard like "Take 5" sounds warmer and more south american - here enlivened by former husband Randy Brecker's trumpet. Elias plays piano throughout and its her rhythmic playing that marks her out as different to others in this vein. Every note has great placement and together with the percussion, gives this its wonderful feel.

Of course it helps that Gilberto Gil guests - singing on 3 tracks and 3 songs are written by him - with his guitar on a couple. But all the musicianship is of the highest standard and this is particularly noticable in the slower tunes - which in other hands could sound dull and safe - but here the playing and singing shine through in a crystal clear recording that allows space for the vocals and each instrument.

"Light my Fire" sounds completely different at such a slow tempo, but never loses that groove, thanks to great bass playing and subtle piano. Elias is never showy and every note seems essential - never superfluous or merely decorative.

Overall a high quality album with some great tunes - not ground-breaking or difficult in any way - but a real soundtrack for the summer.

Eliane is exceptionally good. She is everything I love as a singer and jazz piano player. I love her choice of songs, particularly her native Brazilian numbers having been there, and each rendition is unique and outstanding. I saw her live in London recently and was spellbound. She is also so very beautiful. A piano genuis.

This lady always gives good value for money no matter what album she releases. This latest one is enjoyable, rhythmic and I have been playing it non-stop as it is not an album that you can tire of. Her piano playing is still the best.

This is an excellent record by Eliane, a fantastic singer. Her band and accompanying singer work so well with her. "Light My Fire" has the most unusual and creative accompaniment ever. The whole record is fantastic. Not a dull moment. It's sure to put you on a high.
