Sublte, tense and completely absorbing.,

A wonderful work of fiction that I found completely absorbing. Buchan subtely ratchets up the tension throughout the novel making it compelling reading, so much so I found myself reading the closing pages whilst cooking as I couldn't bear to put it down.
This is a tale woven with complex threads that transports you back to occupied France of the 1940s and the author paints a vivid, detailed and tense picture of the time, laden with atmosphere. I adored the way the characters feelings were explored and their charactrers revealed throughout the story (I fell in love with Jack!). Personally I didn't have to suspend my disbelief all that much as I was familiar with the work of SOE and that female agents were dropped into occupied Eurpoe and also appreciated the meticulous research which was obviously undertaken. I agree with a previous review that I'd have liked the climax to the adventure to have taken longer. The pace here is a stark contrast to the rest of the novel and I really enjoyed how the author had eeked out every detail in previous chapters to build tension. My main critisim is that I feel the main character was a little unexplored emotionally. I liked her (and as every man she met seemed completely besotted with her) I'd liked to have got to know her better. I felt we got to know her through everyone ele's eyes rather than her own mind. Perhaps appropriately though she was a bit of a mystery. I think the answer to the unlikeliness of her relationship with the German officer is well explained in the closing pages from Evelyn's own diary. I'd love to know what happened next in another novel though! I shall certainly remember this tale for a long time.

I enjoyed this book. It tells a good story and I did want to continue reading it even when i got to the end of my journey to work. But to maintain that level of interest I had to suspend belief. I don't know if English women were empoyed undercover to work with the French resistance during the Second World War, but if they did, I am sure they didn't fall in love with German officers. It is an unlikely love story. That said, the activities of the resistance and the skill of the writing do make it worth a read.

Atmospheric but unconvincing,

This is the second Buchan I've read but I suspect it will be the last. This is a slightly odd mix of wartime adventure and romance and the two don't combine well here.
The problem with the adventure part is that not much really happens: there's an aborted raid, then a succesful one and the rest is a lot of really quite dull padding. On the romance front it's even worse: the hero and heroine meet once where he touches her neck; they go on one wonderfully awkward date; and when they next meet wham! they're in love... I also found the end very melodramatic, as if it were a scene written by a teenager. Having said all that, there is some atmospheric stuff, and a good feel for France under occupation. So there's enough ok stuff to warrant a 3* rating, but overall I found this pretty weak and disappointing.
