5.0 out of 5 stars Very moving story, 17 Oct 2007

This review is from: Light Horse to Damascus (Hardcover)
Elyne Mitchell is the famous author of the Silver Brumby series and other books about Australian wild horses. This book is on a different subject altogether but one that she also excels in. The Light Horse were an Australian cavalry outfit that took part in World War I - they were led by Elyne Mitchell's father, General Harry Chauvel and she dedicates the book to him.

The book follows a group of young Australians and their horses through the desert war in Arabia (the same campaign that saw Lawrence of Arabia rise to fame). It tells the story through the experiences of one boy in particular and his horse - you feel the almost unbreakable bond that the two share. The story obviously has many serious moments but these are handled well and mature children will cope with the storyline. There are no excessively graphic or disturbing scenes.

This is a fabulous book, beautifully written, very moving but also exciting and interesting. The story is realistic and very descriptive and will help children to absorb some history without realising they are doing so. As a child I was fascinated from beginning to end and very upset when I had to return the book to the library!
