Light My Fire firesteels have a reputation of being the best firestarters available.
I already have an 'army model' version of this firesteel, the only difference between the army vs scout version is that the scout version in somewhat smaller & is good for 3,000 fires compared to 12,000 from the army version.
The black paint on the steel 'key' should be scraped off first using the smaller striker key to expose the metal underneath, then you are ready to make fire!
I normally use cotton wool coated with a little petroleum jelly (vaseline) to catch the sparks & get the initial fire started then start adding wood shavings & smaller sticks etc to really get the blaze going, I even use this to light my barbecues.

Highly recommended to any budding boy scout & will certainly last for a good few years even with regular use & available in loads of colours. Lovely Stuff!!

Received the item after a rather poor delivery time but thats by the by. The item itself arrived with a fairly big chip missing from the shaft that was later found rattling round in the box. The plastic toggle on the cord also kept falling off. Other than that, the item makes sparks as it should and does as its needed to do. Would just prefer if it had done so without bits falling off to start with.

This is such a great product, that it is actually hard to start talking about this excellent way to start a fire. This tool should be a part of every outdoorsman's kit. Sure, a lighter may be easier to use, but good luck using a lighter at high elevation, when it's raining or below -10 degrees celsius. It simply won't work, leaving you disappointed and freezing cold. Need I say more? Just get this already.

This is brilliant! As you can tell by the title, im a scout leader and the children love it when you make a fire with just some sparks. Its good for other things too, such as lighting gas stoves if you are camping, so it saves matches. Works even after a damp(ish) night too, so you dont have to find that one dry match in the box.

I have used this a lot and it keeps going. the flint is fine and good for another few thousand strikes, easily

If you cannot use one then you are doing something wrong, VERY wrong.
I have this model & have taught succesive children as young as 5 to use, strike & light a fire with this kit.

1.First off the striker needs to be the right way up for max effect.
2. you need tinder (the phrase is tinder dry)
3. sparks ignite small items not chunks of wood initially, we need to coax a flame.
4 if possible for practise grab a few cosmetic make-up remover pads 9round ones) from the bathroom.

5. Tease the pad till it's wispy but still as one pad.
6. make sure your striker is not on the string (limiting movement & potential)
7. your shaft will improve with age, practise strike technique without making grooves on the length of the shaft (rotate it after a few strikes for even wear) ..exposed silver will make for better sparks compared to a brand new black shaft.
NOTE this doesn't mean removing all the black, it just means practise & observe the difference over time!

8. you need to strike in very close proximity to your fuel & make sure it's out of wind in order that it cannot scatter.

9. hold the striker angled against the shaft (you'll see)
10. pull the shaft away from the striker*

*otherwise you stand every chance of bashing your striker into your tinder, scattering it completely.

11. practise the same with a few more cotton pads before moving onto more fuels & bigger things.

It's all technique, you'll get a sore thumb initially ..but it's a simple knack, so I estimate a good 10 -30 minutes getting your strike technique down (it's addictive) ..which will wear the black off & make for better bigger sparks..

Congratulations fire starter!

I enjoy setting alight to things when I am out and about with this (mostly cotton wool and twigs). I will be using it with my class to do some fire building skills. Great buy.

And it has a whistle!!!
