A fairly good knowledge of astrology would be of enormous benefit in order to follow the thread of this book

astounding piece of work 16 April 2009
By occultist - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Extremely difficult to review this book. Out of print since for 60 years, first published in 1889. Kept in the archives of Kessinger Publishing, reprinted, and sold through Amazon.com. Thank heaven for Kessinger otherwise this marvelous book would disappear forever. Burgoyne's book is actually two. The first volume deals with the science of the soul in three sections.... 1.) the genesis of life, 2.)the transition of life, 3.) the realities of life. The second volume addresses the science of the soul and the stars. Here is where he leaves philosophy and gets into the pith of occultism..He writes of the zodiac, the constellations, astrology, mythology, symbolism alchemy part 1 and 2, talismans, ceremonial magic, magic wands, etc......I have never read a more lucid and succinct account of how the soul of man came into being, why he came into being, and where he is going.....He explains why the soul became immeshed in matter, how it did so., and the purpose of doing so. He sets before ones eyes mans relationship to all life forms and to earth itself, and explains our part in earth's evolution as well as all life that she generates.......The elements are addressed as well as the role of sexual power and why it is one of the most powerful forces in existence......and why man's soul mate was sundered from him as well as the means of recovery. Burgoyne speaks truth. If one wishes to pursue the study of esotericism then he must be well grounded in the basics such as the author sets forth. Then, being well grounded, you may pursue the fantasies of 'the new age writers' and have a good laugh. There are a few good occult schools left in this world, Paul Foster Case BOTA, Rosicrucians AMORC, Martinism, etc. to name just a few..To learn techniques you should contact one of them, but first...read Burgoyne and thank your luckly stars (no pun intended) for you will have saved yourself years of stumbling around in the dark searching for the light.
Keep on questing and good luck........

An enlightening piece of literature 5 April 2009
By RyoGTO - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is a treasure chest crammed full of occult wisdom. There is much about the Hermetic occult and their beliefs in this book. I had the feeling I was peering into another dimension and way of viewing the world while reading the information within this text. Burgoyne does a great job assembling the beliefs and practices of Hermeticism, with first hand experience, in an introductory but engaging way. Highly Recommended for seekers of wisdom and students of Hermeticism, the Occult, or Comparative Religions.

A very insightful Introduction 29 July 2012
By Crum - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is a great introduction to the material of esotericism. The information presented here is rich, well-versed, incredibly articulate, heavily allegorical and a solid stepping stone for those who eagerly want to learn more. This book is but a teaser, a piece of a puzzle. For instance, upon finishing the 143 pages I eagerly craved more. I felt as though this book left me on a cliffhanger. But it didn't. Much of the information in this book as been suggested by the author to be mediated upon considerably. It is in the most simplistic of scenarios and objects that archaic truth is found. You should not expect to understand all at once. A truth known in childhood may take weeks to understand by one who never experience what was experience even in later ages. Wisdom of all grades for all disciplines for all sorts reveals itself over time. That is why this wisdom in particular can be easy understood if simply applied. Prior knowledge of any subject is always beneficial. However, the information presented here most likely will be new to you. You will come across some passages that will be familiar, and hence the given definitions will be easy to understand. However for those who are completely new, your subjective expectations will serve you little. Therefore you should do nothing else and read. Some of what will be read may also be in complete contradiction to what has been established and defined, and other parts will only solidify your understanding, as they are common knowledge. True students of any discipline are fully aware that constant practice or mediation is essential for true comprehension. True students also know that unless information has been self-studied, they can never declare full understanding even if they have no understanding. The same logic applies here.
Volume 2 only!!! 7 Nov. 2013
By Cherry - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Buyer Beware! This is only volume 2! Also, I find the different/modern font in this version to be much less aesthetically pleasing than the 1960's copy or a facsimile of the beautiful 60's hardback copy. Your money would be well spent buying the 2013 paperback facsimile of those edition, which includes both volumes, for $14 and change - what a deal. It will come up in an Amazon search. I have that 2013 copy now and it is beautiful. If you want the very best go for the (expensive) 60's hardbacks which will give you the full experience with glossy pages and illustrations. The copied illustrations get the job done, but are a bit muddled of course and leave something to be desired. (there are only charts/illustrations in volume 1) The glossy portrait of Burgoyne is striking and clear in the 60's hardbacks. In the 2013 copy, for some reason it covered in gray and white dots - can't imagine how they managed that.

Great work as always by Mr. Thomas H. Burgoyne. I would recommend this book for anyone within the esoteric arts with a thirst for astronomy & astrology combined within it. The Book came quickly as expected and will make a fine edition to my library. I would also recommend grabbing part 2 as well as it wouldn't be complete without.
