Book Description

Combining scientific research and dramatic narrative, this is the first book to seriously explore the relationship of the near death experience and traditional Christian experience

From the Author

presents path-breaking new data from a major NDE study.
"Light and Death" is not just another interpretive look at the near-death experience (NDE). Instead, it presents actual data from a clinical study involving 160 patients, 47 of whom survived a carefully-documented NDE, and holds fascinating implications for:

1. Science: One patient was documented to have a temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit; no heartbeat, respiration, or blood pressure; and a nonfunctioning brain stem and cerebral cortex. While in this condition, her head was drained of all blood! She encountered the deepest NDE of the study and was able to accurately perceive visual and auditory details from an "out-of-body" location. This case with its extensive medical documentation raises pivotal new questions about our scientific understanding of dying and the moment of death.

2. Medicine: The results of this study are combined with other published medical research to propose for the first time that the powerful psychodynamics within an NDE may actually determine the physical outcome of a cardiac arrest, and that NDE aftereffects may significantly promote long-term survival and healing.

3. Spirituality: The study uncovers surprising new associations between the NDE, prayer, religious beliefs and psychic experiences. Some of these findings directly challenge those of other widely-read NDE reports.

4. Theology: Carefully using the results of the study and extensive biblical reference, I conclude that the NDE is best understood as a spiritual experience of the soul separating from the dying physical body.

Sabom's narrow definition of a traditional Christian may put off some readers -- I think about seven of the twelve apostles would have qualified. However, the one NDE by the patient who had her heart stopped, her body temperature lowered to 58 degrees, and her blood drained in connection with a delicate brain operation is worth the price of the book. Although I would qualify as a "liberal" Christian by Sabom's ten criteria, I am very sympathetic to the concern he expresses about certain NDE researchers (Ring, Moody) who seem to be moving in a direction where NDE experiences are blended with New Age beliefs to establish an "NDE theology" that may be superficially appealing but is at variance with traditional beliefs. Sabom's message seems to be that NDEs are scientifically credible evidence of the afterlife and can used to support Christian belief, but they must be viewed with discernment and cannot be indiscriminately accepted as messages from God. Definitely worth buying for the one NDE, even if you're a non-Christian.

Dr.Sabom makes an excellent point in pointing out that death is a process rather than some definitive point of "no return." However I do not agree with him thinking that Dr. Moody and Dr.Ken Ring are forging a New Age theology. But even if such a theology were to come into being what difference does it make to Sabom? Is his religious belief so fragile that he can't accomodate the feelings of those who diverge from HIS path? Sabom's book is quite refreshing when compared to Dr.Maurice Rawlings near-death research. Dr.Rawlings, a fundamentalist Christian, tries to frighten people into accepting Christianity by telling them that if they don't accept his version of jesus they can expect a Hellish near-death experience. What a small time Jesus this must be! Dr.Sabom is to be commended for presenting such a well thought out presentation of the near-death subject. His book is very thought provoking.

Unlike most all of the other popular books available on near death experience, Dr. Sabom has used a rigorously scientific approach to examine this fascinating subject. It's such a great read, I'm sending this book as Christmas gifts to a number of family, friends and business associates.
