Book Description

27 Sep 2013
Lifting Shadows, the authorized biography of Dream Theater - the American progressive-metal band comprising James LaBrie, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, John Myung and Mike Mangini - traces the band's history from their mid-1980's Long Island origins through to the arena filling act that they are today. This revised and updated edition features all-new interviews with the band and a host of others who have played their part in the rise of the pioneering prog-metal act. It covers the departure of founding drummer Mike Portnoy, the search for his successor and the band's spirited return. Their tale is one of musical integrity, strong professional perseverance and a deep-rooted belief in their direction. The five-piece has enjoyed major success (notably with "Pull Me Under") while remaining essentially an underground band. They thrive on the support of a growing and loyal fan base. As guitarist and founding member John Petrucci writes: "It's incredible, and we are all very blessed and fortunate to have such a long career - not only where we started in America but all over the world."

4.0 out of 5 stars Reverie in an auditorium 12 Sep 2014

Really good read. Most books of this ilk can get a little samey but this kept me riveted from page one. There is enough detail to keep even the most ardent of fans interested. Whilst only of note to fans of the band, have you ever tried reading biographies of bands/people you don't like, it is worth the effort and will reward the reader.

The only reason I have dropped of a star is there is no discography or any of the individual members solo releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for DT fans 8 April 2014

I have been a DT fan since the beginning and this book is like a thriller I could not put down. I knew the basic story but many aspects of the story were new to me. The book goes into excruciating details about the band, managers, record company, touring, etc etc, basically all that I want to know as a DT addict. No fans will find it boring I guess, but this eaves many millions of interested people in theory. The work behind this is enormous, and thanks to the author for writing it. Next edition should include photos of the main characters, I guess, but this is a minor gripe. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read for one of the Great bands today! 31 Dec 2013

A very well written, informative book on one of the giants of Progressive Rock/Metal. If you're new to this amazing band, get this book. If you're long term fan of the band…get this book. The twists and turns of the saga of being in a professional band, who is not playing 'mainstream' music, is riveting. It really is the Music BUSINESS, and these guys have been battling it for over 25 years now, and actually getting bigger… Highly recommend this to all budding musicians, fans, and anyone who appreciates guys who stick to their guns, never lose sight of their 'Dream', and power through to the top!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography about one of the greatest bands ever! 18 Mar 2014

Being a Dream Theater fan, I read this book in the span of about a week, which is rare for me, especially as this was a thick book with small print. This was the best book I've read in a long time, telling the story of Dream Theater's founding, challenges with the music industry, their integrity during those trials, and their constant progress through the times up to the point when Mike Mangini replaced Mike Portney on drums. This book is alive as you experience extended quotes from band members and others who worked with them. You get all sides of the story in this book. I feel as if I know these people after this engaging read. Another thing I liked about this book is the detail given to explain the inspirations and meanings behind many of their songs, described by the band members themselves. As a musician who has been on a long hiatus, this book has re-energized my inspiration to begin recording again. I will definitely read this book again in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing 27 April 2014

This book was simply amazing. I learned a lot of new things about the band that I wasn't aware of. It is VERY well-written, well-researched, and well... satisfying! I highly recommend buying this book if you want to learn a lot about the band Dream Theater. As a matter of fact... I wish other books about other bands were as good as this book is. I would definitely read more from this writer.

I know that I will be re-reading this book many times in the future.

The book was long... I am a fast reader... it took me about a week to read. When you open the book, it has text from the very top of the page ... jam packed... all the way to the bottom. It took FULL advantage of the page size. Nicely designed... the cover was interesting. I would have loved to see a different color scheme... blue with stars and dustclouds... but that's being picky.

Comes with my HIGHEST recommendation.
