Review

"Ruby, the silly but likeable antiheroine of Hilary Freeman's perceptive and fast-paced Lifted comes from a more recognisable contemporary teen world, where insecurity and boredom are the sources of most ills. Displaying the common sense and warped desire for fame of a Big Brother evictee, Ruby creates a blog to publicise her serial shoplifting in the persona of Robyn Hood, who donates stolen goods to charity shops. If parents are anxious about the shoplifting tips, rest assured that this is a truly cautionary tale." -- Geraldine Brennan, The Observer, August 8, 2010

"Hilary Freeman is a genuinely amazing author, almost uniquely able to be both gritty and frothy at the same time. Lifted is delightfully written and beautifully plotted and, in Ruby, has a great central character. The shoplifting scenes are incredibly vivid ... Heartily recommended." -- Anthony McGowan, author

Lifted is a compelling, original and thought-provoking novel." -- Chicklish, August 2010

"Like Hilary Freeman's earlier books, this is a fast-paced, readable story rooted convincingly in the everyday lives of modern teenage girls. It is also a cautionary tale ... the story brings out the temptations and hazards of modern internet life, above all the spurious attractions of unearned and media-fed celebrity." --School Librarian, Winter 2010

"I really enjoyed reading this, and think any teenage girl would as they can identify with the life of Ruby the antiheroine of the book. Its well thought out story line kept me reading, and wanting to find out what happens next. An excellent read." - 5 stars --theschoolrun.com, January 2011

Ruby is an ordinary girl, leading a normal life. Then one day when she's out shopping alone, she steals a pair of American Tan tights from a chain store whose staff have been rude and useless. It gives her a buzz but she's not particularly proud of herself. To ease her conscience, she donates the stolen tights to a charity shop. Slowly, she begins a cycle of shoflifting and donating items, keeping records on the blog that her ex-friend and neighbour, the geeky Noah, helps her start. She calls her online persona "Robyn Hood". But her blog is discovered and Robyn Hood hits the big time. Ruby could be famous... but shoplifting is a crime. Should she reveal her true identity?

This story is told partly in blog entries and partly in third-person narrative focusing on both Ruby and Noah. The chatty, easy-to-read style and the unusual plot hooked me from the first page. Ruby's home life and her relationships with family and friends are well drawn and utterly believable, and I particularly liked Noah and the way his character developed. I enjoyed the dark-edged but sweet romance in the book, and although there's a sense of impending doom throughout, the storyline always kept me guessing. I was almost reading through my fingers when the characters made certain decisions, but I still hoped that things would turn out well for everyone.

Lifted is a compelling, original and thought-provoking novel.

A Fantastic Read... 28 July 2010
By Suzie W
Format:Paperback
I bought this book because I saw it advertised in another book which I'd enjoyed. I had no idea what to expect but once I started reading it I found it hard to stop. It has a completely unpredictable ending, and will keep you hooked from start to end.
It follows the story of a teenage girl, Ruby, who starts to steal things. To ease her conscience she donates the items to charity shops. With some help from a boy who she has known since she was little, Ruby soon becomes famous. Everybody is claiming to be 'Robyn Hood', and Ruby has to make the decision whether to own up to the crime and possibly face a prison sentence, or let other people take the fame which she has wished for.
I would recommend this to any teenage girl, who enjoys reading! I'm really glad that I decided to buy this book, and I enjoyed it so much that I have ordered another of Hilary Freeman's books.

Perfect for teens 28 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this for my fussy 14 year old. She's not much of a reader but I thought it might appeal to her and I was right (finally). She devoured it over one weekend and has put the author's other books on her wishlist. Well recommended!
