Ruby is an ordinary girl, leading a normal life. Then one day when she's out shopping alone, she steals a pair of American Tan tights from a chain store whose staff have been rude and useless. It gives her a buzz but she's not particularly proud of herself. To ease her conscience, she donates the stolen tights to a charity shop. Slowly, she begins a cycle of shoflifting and donating items, keeping records on the blog that her ex-friend and neighbour, the geeky Noah, helps her start. She calls her online persona "Robyn Hood". But her blog is discovered and Robyn Hood hits the big time. Ruby could be famous... but shoplifting is a crime. Should she reveal her true identity?
This story is told partly in blog entries and partly in third-person narrative focusing on both Ruby and Noah. The chatty, easy-to-read style and the unusual plot hooked me from the first page. Ruby's home life and her relationships with family and friends are well drawn and utterly believable, and I particularly liked Noah and the way his character developed. I enjoyed the dark-edged but sweet romance in the book, and although there's a sense of impending doom throughout, the storyline always kept me guessing. I was almost reading through my fingers when the characters made certain decisions, but I still hoped that things would turn out well for everyone.
Lifted is a compelling, original and thought-provoking novel.
