5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, inventive irish fiddle music, 27 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Liffey Banks (Audio CD)
I got "The Liffey Banks" when it first appeared about thirty years ago. We wore it out listening to "the miserable Irishman". His versions of traditional tunes are sometimes almost unrecognizable and certainly undancable. The rhythms flow back and forth like the tide. The repeats never are, instead they become variations on a theme in the spirit, but not the form, of jazz. Tommy is as steeped in the tradition as anyone and never puts a foot wrong. A unique musician and a unique record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liffey Banks, 3 Oct 2010
By Fleetstreet Pauline "731HOP" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Liffey Banks (Audio CD)
It is my understanding that this is the only available recording of the works of this fine musician. There was a movie made in the late 70's taking place mostly in a small town in Ireland, the lead role played by Patrick Mcgoohan, and the tune "The Dear Irish Boy" performed by Tommy Potts heard several times throughout the movie. The melody so fitting to the mood and character of the movie, I could not get it out of my head. Upon a bit of searching found this cd. I recommend the listener take a rainy day, a hot cup of tea(or maybe more appropriate a bit of Jameson), a comfortable chair, relax listen to a bit of the cd then segue into a viewing of the movie The Hard Way to fully appreciate the power of this music. Then back to the cd. An added musical bonus to the movie was music provided by Brian Eno, further adding to the tension and melancholy mood of the movie. Enjoy!
