Useful piece of kit 27 Oct 2011
I decided to write this review after P. Harrison decided to give the Lifesystems Bothy 2 a one star review. It if fairly safe to say P.Harrison doesn't really know what the Bothy 2 is for. This is a pretty lightweight (400g) emergency shelter which packs down to a compact size. It allows 2 people to sit upright and gain some shelter from fierce weather. Due to it being quite cramped, the temperature inside rises quite quickly, although the downside is that a certain amount of condensation is inevitable. It could also be used by one person as an emergency bivy bag by lying full length in the bag and wrapping it around the body. Being bright orange with reflective strips, it aids rescue location. The Bothy2 appears well made, easily packs into itself. I think the price is reasonable for the quality of the product. If you are looking for some kind of magic tardis tent which provides space and comfort at 400g, then this is not for you. If you want a really useful piece of gear which can be used for anything from a quick break from nasty weather to an emergency overnight bivy, then you could do much worse. Good luck with that sheet of plastic P. Harrison.

This bothy is fantastic addition to a hill walkers backpack. Though not an essential item it can provide a welcome break for two people from the rain and wind while making stops on the hills. This bothy I found suitable for the following while on the hills:

1. Having some shelter from the elements can make important decisions easier (giving you comfort from the rain and wind to think).
2. Allow you to change socks or other clothes in relative dryness.
3. Allow you to take a non-weather proof map out of a map case without allowing water to soil it.
4. For meal stops.
5. I was able to use the bothy as a single person shelter be putting my rucksack where the other person would be too.

I don't give it five stars because I found it's stuff sack (which doubles as a air vent when in use) to be a little too small. When the bothy has been in the rain and wind for twenty minutes it gets very cold to the touch and a person using it wants to get the shelter back in it's stuff sack ASAP. The solution is of course to wear gloves, but want happens if you happen not to have any (stupidly) or the one's you are using don't allow enough dexterity. I've done the packing operation in the warmth of the indoors too. I was surprised how long it took-a couple of minutes even without frozen fingers. I would like to see a slightly larger stuff sack with a little more compression.

I would however recommend this item for use on the hills for any of the uses I number above from 1 to 5.

Great life saver 5 July 2010
By Andy
This is a great product although I have not used it yet it will be a great thing to have in case we get stuck up a mountain, it is very light and easy to carry put up in seconds and the really good thing is that it folds away really easy too.
