Book Description

27 Oct 2008

Life's tough. When it gets nasty; get tougher!

I stared into the dark. Far-off lights reflected, shimmered and danced on the roiling water. The river washed everything downstream while the lights sparkled in one place. It was all illusion. Somewhere, deep below, hidden within the weeds and muck, buried, lurked other things. Things that wouldn't, couldn't, be washed away. Unseen. Unknown. Waiting. Life had moved on, but, like the lights on the water, I was stuck in one place. And I dread the horrid things buried within.

Hard-boiled? or only poached in Tabasco? Either way, private detective Rachel Cord pursues multiple threads seeking a runaway teen and why gay performers are being beaten at Miss Kitty's Kathouse Kabaret. The threads twist and bind becoming a tight cord of lost love, child pornography, rape, murder, and near insanity.

More About the Author

I think that each of us is unique and yet we are the distillation of everything that has come before. So it is with writing also, and mine owes as much to Aristophanes as it does to J. A. Jance; to Aesop as much as to Ray Bradbury; to the Grimm Brothers as to John D. MacDonald; to Shakespeare as to Raymond Chandler; to the nameless bards who sang of Cú Chulainn and Conaire Mor and the nameless scribes who later wrote down their words as to Homer who gave us Achilles and Odysseus, and Edmond Rostand and Miguel de Cervantes who immortalized Cyrano and Don Quixote, and Fritz Leiber who gave us Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.

Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Fredric Brown, Phillip José Farmer, Ian Fleming, Zane Grey, J. R. R. Tolkien, A. A. Milne, James Thurber, Mark Twain, Robert W. Service, John Steinbeck, Hemingway, Ayn Rand, Solzhenitsyn, Checkov, Pasternak, John Donne, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Sappho, Ben Hecht, Emil Petaja, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Beatrix Potter, Ogden Nash, Heinlein, Clarke, Azimov, Ellison, Silverberg, Dick, Simak, Vonnegut, Verne, Dumas, Hugo, Chesterton, Conan Doyle, Thomas Jefferson, Tom Paine, Alice Walker, Elmore Leonard, the list goes on and on ad infinitum.

Every author, whether I've read his or her works or not, whether I liked his or her works or not; every writer, scribe who ever typed, penned, incised a word, a line, are as much a part of me, my DNA, as the Conarys, Dames, Longs, Fullers, Cousins, Chilton on back to that first amoeba that tweaked to life in the long forgotten primordial ooze.

5.0 out of 5 stars intriguing character, compelling plot. 5 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book. In turns heartbreaking, hilarious and intriuging.
If you are looking for something new in the way of crime fiction, give this a go. On finishing this, I immediately bought everything else the author has written.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT WHAT A STORY 5 Aug 2010
Many detective books have no single original or memorable character
including the detective. Some are of superior quality. THIS private
detective, Rachel Cord, IS VERY memorable.

One month and 10 more reads I still have the most vivid memories of this book. It has well drawn characters and almost unbearable suspense as its reaches its climax.

What cruelly happened to Rachel in one part of the book still rolls around in my head from time to time and it's back with the whole feeling of it.

The story's intriguing, the characters compelling and the action
