This is Jeff Mills's second complilation of tracks featuring music from the early Waveform Vol. 3 Ep, and a collection from both Axis and Purpose Maker EP's. It covers a varied selection of Hard 4/4 funk, techno, emotional compositions and some of the most lush ambient soundscapes you will ever hear. When Jeff Mills was composing with Mike Banks and Robert Hood with Underground Resistance they were always about producing harder (not faster) beats, and emotional strings, and Jeff stills stays true to this Formula on some of the tracks. Some of these 4/4 club based tracks he produces under the Purpose maker guise are not your usual 'tech' affair. They Always feature complex rythyms and intricate loops that almost nobody can better, and gives a new meaning (and expansion) to the Hard Funk genre. Their inclusion on this album does baffle me though as they are better suited to wax where Dj's such as Carl Cox, Surgeon and Dave Clarke cane them within their Club sets. This Album really should have been either another Purpose maker only compilation (for DJ's to use) or a collection of his more ambient soundscapes and excursions released under the Axis label. It's these tracks that feature on this compilation that I feel are the standout tracks. When he produces his soundscapes they range from the Dark and sinister 'detroitian' arrangements through to Sci-Fi soundtracks, and on to more emotional lush string and sometimes orchestral - hence the extra appeal to more outminded people) compositions that very few Techno musicians and composers strive to acheive. To conclude, it is a good collection and the added interview with the psychiatrist contained within the footnotes may give the buyers of this album an insight into the mind of Jeff Mills, and maybe even an inspiration.

I may be biased when it comes to reviewing anything Jeff Mills related, so I'll try to be as neutral as possible.

Ok. Maybe we'll start with the not-so-positive points.... Of which there is only one.

There are a few of these tracks which have been included in other compilations/albums of Mr Mills (eg. "Nepta" was included in the classic album 'The Other Day'). Mills' reasoning behind this (according to himself) was to enhance certain points in the album, which he felt the track had.

So. Positive points :)

As we all know (if, like myself, you eat, sleep, walk, run, drink, laugh, cry, and just generally live life to anything to do with The Purpose Maker), you will know that this album comes with descriptions such as Sublime, Varied, Atmospheric, Contemplative, Tough, Moody, etc etc.

Varied in it's approach, we have tracks such as the aforementioned 'Nepta', which is both thoughtful, yet twisted; adventurous, yet dark. Twists and turns, subtle but pounding 808 kick drum, filtered synths swirl around you, whilst the rest of the elements dance around you.

If you are a Jeff Mills aficionado, you will know exactly what to expect, accept and discard.

If you are new to his art, you will find that it's not just about Techno music. It's so much more than that.

It will be a rewarding experience, like life itself.

for those who are uninitiated with the sound of jeff mills, this would not be the best place to start, for his fans, this latest release is something of a disappointment. it would always be difficult for him to produce an 'album' as such, as much of his music is designed for use in clubs, but it would be fair to say that his 'purposemaker' compilation was a fine collection of some of his best tracks. 'life like' doesn't really contain anything to surprise the listener, which is a shame, as jeff mills usually creates some of the most original and interesting electronic music. for serious mills fans only.

Shhh... A Master is at Work 6 July 2000

I don't think there is another word that is so misused by the music industry as the word, "techno". If you are reading this review, checking out the new Jeff Mills CD, you know what I'm talking about. Mills is a top-flight producer. The sound of this CD is rich and deep, but retains the hard edge that characterizes Mills enduring vision. This is a must have record for fans of Detroit Techno... just don't tell the music critics.

Allucinate!!! 20 Jan. 2002

Jeff Mills follows the same path of his prior releases and releases another brilliant CD.
Another calm and introspective CD, with a lot of weird strings and synths (just like we're used to).
So... What's the difference between Lifelike and the other Jeff Mill's releases???
Well, for starters, this CD has much better "track quallity" than the prior releases of the same kind. I'm not saying the other CD releases suck (they'r brilliant!!!), i'm just sayin' this CD is better! (Of course, this is just my opinion).
Once u put on your headphones, u get stuck in a world created by Jeff Mills, using u as it's "fuel".
U'll have "visions" if u close your eyes and when u finish listening to it, u'll have the sudden urge to listen to it again...
Consider yourself warned!
