Made in 2000, 'Life'll Kill Ya' is yet another high quality collection of songs from Warren Zevon, full of vivid images and a mix of the biting and the humourous. The songs are not always easy to understand, often containing ambiguities and metaphors but you always get a sense of Zevon's feelings. Track nine is not listed on the sleeve of my copy, doubtless because the title contains a couple of profanities, but I can say that it's a hilarious account of a visit to the doctor. Elsewhere, much of the album has a spiritual feel which is bound up with Zevon's enhanced sense of his mortality.
The musical style is more consistent than on some albums, lurking in that territory between folk, rock and country which is often referred to as Americana. Think of Springsteen with an acoustic sound and a harmonica. No outstanding songs, just a very good album.

Life'll Kill Ya is a rather ironic title for this Zevon outing, as not many years afterwards he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and sadly left us in 2003. It's all the more poignant then, that several songs here should dwell on dying and death, and in characteristic style Zevon tinges most of the songs here with more than a little black humour. Vocally, I think this was his last strong album - the follow-up "My Ride's Here" was a pretty lacklustre affair with some silly songs, and "The Wind", although fine, really reveals the fragility of the man before he died. So, enjoy the madness one more time!

This is a superb album from the sorely missed Warren Zevon. Heralded as a comeback at the time, the reality is that WZ never went away. Never prolific, every album he released is high quality and this is no exception. The songs are finely crafted, the sound is sparse - mostly just acoustic guitar or piano, bass and drums - and there is an overall theme of ageing and redemption. Too many highlights to list - from the stomping opener "I was in the house...", the blue-eyed soul of "I Will Slow you Down," Elvis-tribute track "Porcelain Monkey", gospel tinged "Fistful of Rain" and the hymn-like closer "Don't Let Us Get Sick". A great album from a great and criminally underrated singer songwriter. 5 stars!!

Pleasing album
Nice collection of lesser-known Zevon tracks here, and if you have bought one of the compilation disc's then this will be a worthy complment to it. Read more
